Troy, New York is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 1,565 at the 2010 census. It is the only town in Onondaga County and it is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The community began as a small village near modern-day Troy on the east side of what is now Lake Ontario in 1814. In 1825, it became a town and has resisted annexation by other towns to keep its name and shape. The Town of Troy was first settled in 1792 by Loyalists from Pennsylvania who had fled during the American Revolutionary War. John Beattie platted the village on what is now Erie Street and Main Street on December 10th, 1792. By 1800, there were fifty residents living in Troy Township; by 1825 there were two hundred residents living in Troy Village. In 1814, when Ulster settlers arrived from Irelandtown (now Orchard Park) via boat to start their settlement along present-day Erie Boulevard south of where they would soon build their homes, they also started Settlement Road east of where today's Main Street meets downtown Troy. When these pioneers encountered difficulties getting water supplies for their new settlements from local springs – which still exist today – they turned to farming for sustenance instead and named their new villages after hills or landmarks around them: For example Settlers Road got its name from nearby Hennepin Hill because so many men had died trying to reach that summit during General Anthony Wayne's siege of Fort Duquesne (1778). Accordingly, both villages continued to be called "Hennepin" until well into the late 19th century when everyone except Irish immigrants began using surnames more generally throughout their communities north of Buffaloville Sands creek on Lackawanna Creek (today's Elmira). In 1825 township officials decided that it would make more sense for allocating land evenly among all its inhabitants rather than having each one choose one seniority within township government with respect to agricultural production or development - an arrangement which continues to this day despite numerous attempts by successive mayors over time to change it back again! As such, Independence Day celebrations took place at different locations within town prior to finally settling down around what are now Third Avenue and Court House Square on July 4th following a heated debate between deputies William Aiken and James O'Brien about whether or not parades should be held due mostlyto concerns about drunkenness among returning veterans attending traditional weekend fairs...and since alcohol was then prohibited entirely inside any public building/grounds within township limits! On January 11th 1830 fire destroyed much of downtown business district including most buildings on Third Ave., killing 5 people including 3 firefighters; however some windows were saved leading up current Second Ave.. This event forever changed downtown Troy as businesses could never again freely open up within 500 feet of any building/fire hydrant without fear eitherof another blaze destroying everything once again! With businesses unable even upperclass citizens could afford insurance rates above $50 per year at this time (!), life pretty much revolved around mahogany-paneled storefronts surrounding large gabled roofs characteristically associated with wealthier areas today like Buffaloville Sands creek; often times ovens could still be seen baking goods just off brick sidewalks serving up hearty dinners during morning rush hours! Today’s highly commercialized center containing multiple restaurants & gasoline stations overlooking enormous plaza filled with dense tree cover makes little sense whatsoever as did earlier plans for mixed use redevelopment centered around creating housing units attached directly onto existing shopping malls located adjacent thereto if & when demand warranted...given present day physical condition & lackadaisical attitude exhibited by “gentlemen” towards general maintenance issues (& sprawl!) overall priorities should rightfully revert back towards indigenous original functions served herein long ago!

The town name originated from the French word " Trois rouges" meaning three reds (triple). The town began to develop as a commercial center in 1812 when it became known as "the terminus of the Erie Canal". In 1827, Troy became one of five towns located along the Amherst Road rapids which formed what are now called Buffalo–Niagara Falls Regional Airport and Interstate 87. The railroads arrived in Troy during this time and led to increased development including hotels, restaurants, stores and office buildings. In 1941, during World War II, Troy served as headquarters for General Motors' Canada wartime Operations Center where Canadians processed materials received from American factories across Canada. Today reminders of that time can be found throughout downtown Tirys Main Street where GM plants once stood including a gantry above Pier One overlooking Lake Erie
Troy was settled in 1785 by Captain John Smith and his men. The first store was built on the site in 1826. The town was named after General George Washington, who died in 1799. Troy became a city in 1898 and has had many different names through the years, including Troy Township, Troy-on-the-Hudson, Troya, and finally Troy.
