It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Tonawanda were the Menomonee and Kickapoo Tribes. In 1795, John Graves Simcoe founded the towns of Niagara and Tonawanda on both sides of the Niagara River. On July 14, 1802, during the American Revolutionary War, General Washington's army destroyed Fort Erie at Niagara Falls while attacking Canadian forces under Major-General Howe. Prior to this event, Montreal had been control of Canada's eastern border with New York City and as such Fort Erie represented a strategic point between these two cities that could be used by either side to invade or blockade its neighbor. In 1825 William Matson founded an agricultural colony near present-day Dunkirk Lake in western Erie County. This settlement became known as Matsonville after him and his son Augustus Matson (1824-1900). The town was renamed Tonawanda in 1889 following prohibitionist efforts within local politics to keep drinking water from becoming available for development outside of Amsterdam Landing on Buffalo Bayou (now called Canalside Boulevard), which lay close to Matsonville proper on what is now State Route 519 south of Tonawanda village limits. During World War II much of northeastern Pennsylvania was devastated by bombing raids from Japan; however little damage was done toTonawanda due to its largely rural character and lack of industrial production potential relative to other parts of the state suffered extensive damage including many homes losing their roofs but no loss of life due to fire or bombing raid occurring there during that time period However some factories did come up around town like manufacturing ammunition for planes but they closed down very shortly after Pearl Harbor because war got too expensive for them
