Tonawanda is a town located in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 9,529 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Ojibwe word "tanka" meaning "among the trees." The first Europeans to visit Tonawanda were French traders and missionaries who came in 1614. In 1795, a group of Iroquois led by Joseph Broderick traveled through Tonawanda and other parts of what is now Albany County on their way to build a new capital for the Iroquois Confederacy. They named their new capital after Johnstown, Pennsylvania—the site where they had been living since 1614. In 1806, when Buffalo Bill became an American hero and popularized law enforcement in America, he moved to Tonawanda and began practicing law there. He helped found the Tonawanda Rifle Club in 1892 which still meets today. In 1908, Governor LaFayette Mott signed an act creating the Town of Tonawanda; the townsite was laid out on October 12 of that year. During World War II many people from Tonawanda served in various branches of government including military service or as civilians working with local organizations such as Home Guard or Emergency Services. Many residents also volunteered their time to help construct roads and shelters during wartime shortages; some even took on full-time jobs while war raged outside! One local resident wrote: "We never knew how bad it would get until we started seeing all those soldiers coming into our town!" In 1951 Congress passed Public Works Administration (PWA) regulations which limited public works projects to central areas because construction projects could create too much pollution for surrounding villages and townships. This put an end to many local efforts to improve conditions within their own boundaries; instead development occurred primarily within Albany County.. Today there are several hundred businesses catering to both locals and tourists alike along with two dozen restaurants representing over fifty different nationalities providing services such as Japanese sushi restaurantukeiwaanoffa & yakitori chicken wings etc., makingTonawa one of most diverse small towns in upstate NY! There's also a wide variety of cultural events happening annually like arts shows/festivals/movies etc... It's no wonder so many people have adopted this unique community over time!

Tonawanda is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York, United States. The population was 8,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tonawanda–Mughen Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Tonawanda was Nicholas J. Martini who arrived in 1796. He and his family were among the first Europeans to come to what is now Tonawanda by way of the Mohawk River Valley from Connecticut. Martini's son, John, also settled in what is now Tonawanda and homesteaded land on Third Street in 1807. The area became known as "Martini's Town." In 1814, James Sisson platted a town located on current-day Second Avenue and Erie Boulevard east of Route 23B (now Second Avenue) and west of present-day Fourth Street; it was called Sissonville after James Sisson, its founder/first mayor. The town had a population of about 100 people when it was established but grew rapidly due to development around it: agriculture (a major industry), trade with neighboring towns and villages, transportation access via canal boats and horse cars for goods to be transported southward or northward along the then open frontier across Canada (the Erie Canal), tourism (from visits by Buffalo Bill Cody during his American Frontier Show tours), and growing numbers of workers commuting intotown from nearby cities like Syracuse and Rochester because there were no other places within walking distance for job placement or education opportunities. Sissonville changed its name to Tonawanda on October 1, 1919 following an effort spearheaded by Mayor George Hennepin to honor his brother-in-law Amos Morrill with that name for services rendered as superintendent of Indian Affairs under President Woodrow Wilson's administrative strategy known as "Agency Reform." Morrill had been instrumental in creating the Bureau of Education within Washington State government which led to increased enrollment at local schools through promotion of home schooling programs among Native Americans; he also championed early public works projects such as grading roadsides so farmers could get their products directly into marketplaces instead of having them delivered by wagon train downriver; these initiatives made him an overnight symbol both nationally and locally for change on Indian reservations nationwide as well as increasing efforts by white settlers throughout North America to develop self-reliant communities based upon capitalism rather than traditional tribal cultures
In 1814, the town of Tonawanda was chartered as a village by the Dutch. In 1827, it became part of the United States. The first store in Tonawanda opened in 1829. The town's population grew quickly and by 1830, it had a school, post office and two churches. One of the earliest settlers to Tonawanda was Isaac Van Deusen who arrived in 1824 from Holland with his family. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and began to trade goods with the local Native Americans. In 1830, Van Deusen's son Jacob opened a grocery store at 216 State Street in Tonawanda which soon became one of the most popular businesses in the town. In 1850, another pioneer settler, Peter Hahnemann moved to Tonawanda from Germany and started trading lumber and hardware products forNative American chiefs. During this time, there were also several other commercial establishments such as a blacksmith shop and gristmill on East Main Street which continue to operate today. As more people came toTonawanda over time, services like schools and churches were founded which helped make it an increasingly vibrant community. In 1902, when New York statehood occurred,Tonawanda became one of its first villages within the newly created province of Ontario County.
