Tonawanda is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York. It is located on the border of Niagara Falls and the Ontario county of Wayne County, east of Buffalo and west of Rochester. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Tonawanda was George Fenton in 1811. In 1814, John Herrick founded a gristmill near present-day Parkersport village, which became an important agricultural center during the early 1800s. By 1840, there were over sixty people living in Tonawanda. In 1847, Methodist missionaries arrived to start a mission settlement in what is now Tonawanda village; they named it after their home country (the United Kingdom). The mission was successful and by 1850 there were ninety-six residents living in Tonawanda. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Fort Erie was used as a Union military base and many soldiers from Tonawanda garrisoned the fort; this caused some economic difficulties for the town because many commercial businesses closed down during that time period. In 1865, following the end of World War I, most missions within New York State were discontinued; however, one exception was St. John’s Lutheran Church (later renamed First Unitarian Church) which continued to operate until 1925. tonawandansbuzz@gmail

In 1624, the Dutch explorer Hendrick Hudson sailed into what is now Tonawanda County, New York on his first European voyage. He named the area after the town of Utrecht in Holland. A year later, Hudson's group discovered a new route to China through present-day New York City and named the river by its discovery. In 1627, English explorer Johnse de Witt discovered and explored what is now Niagara Falls while traveling through Canada. De Witt named the falls after Lord Ulster in Ireland—the first person to conceptually explore and name part of North America east of the Appalachian Mountains. The English then used Utrecht's name for Niagara Falls as well as other parts of their possession in what is now Canada and upstate New York. The Dutch Republic was divided in 1795 during the French Revolution following its victory over Spain in that year's War of Independence. As a result, Canadan Upper Canada became part of British North America while Lower Canada remained with France until it was annexed by Great Britain in 1867. The mill at Buffalo Falls went into operation at this time, becoming one of the most important mills in rural New York State. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson ordered American troops withdrawn from World War I so that he could focus on creating social welfare programs; however, American forces continued to occupy Buffalo Falls during World War II as part of Project Paperclip which involved stealing American scientists talent for use in Nazi Germany. After World War II ended, American troops returned to Buffalo Falls and continue to live there today as guests of the Canadian military establishment stationed here (eXtreme Forces Command). Tonawanda has been an important center for cultural life throughout much of its history. The region played host to major exhibitions such as "The Arts Itself" held at nearby Seneca College in 1954 and "New Netherland: An Exhibition Of Paintings And sculptures By Nicholas-Jacques Conte" staged at Elmira College between 1961 and 1963; these were followed by "American Indian Art: A Survey" presented at Binghamton University between 1974 and 1976 comprising over fifty thousand pieces from around North America including more than two hundred Native American art objects dating back to before European contact; finally "A Tribute To Our Ancestors: The Iroquois Confederacy Image Collection" organized by Geneseo Community College between 1984 and 1986 drew together over one thousand items from various sites within or adjacent to Tonawanda County including artifacts from Manchuria
Tonawanda was settled in 1614 by the Dutch. The town was founded on the site of what is now known as Tonawanda Regional High School. It was renamed Tonawanda after the Erie Canal was completed in 1825, and growth led to the construction of a new courthouse and jail in 1829. In 1851, Tonawanda became one of five towns in New York State that were chartered as villages by Governor Charles L. Schuyler. In 1865, Tonawanda lost its charter but regained it in 1870 when it merged with nearby village of Utica. During World War II, Tonawanda served as an assembly point for thousands of soldiers military forces deployed to fight in Europe. After the war,Tonawanda experienced rapid growth and development thanks to its location within New York's transportation network and its status as a manufacturing center for textiles, shoes, furniture and other products. In the 1970s and 1980s,Tonawanda endured heavy economic recession which caused many businesses to close their doors; however, local residents continue to support their community through fundraising drives and initiatives such as "Operation Smile." In recent years, Tonawanda has seen continued redevelopment efforts spearheaded by Mayor Kathy Sheehan who has worked to revitalize thetown through his vision for an artsy-craftsy-tourismy economy that encourages entrepreneurship among both locals and visitors alike.
