Tonawanda (population: 21,865) is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 24,567 at the 2000 census. Tonawanda is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The towns of Tonawanda and Niagara Falls were merged to form one town on February 15, 1881. Boroughs of Tonawanda and Niagara Falls were consolidated into a single municipality on April 1, 1922. On December 5, 1988, the two municipalities amalgamated again to form the current city of Tonawanda with a population of 31,505 as of 2014. In 1795-1796 William Johnson platted an area now comprising most of present-day Tonawanda Township and parts of what are now Erie and Seneca Counties; this included much territory between the Hennepin and Ottawa Rivers. In 1800 John Smith Jr., who had bought land from Johnson in 1795 surveyed what would become today's eastern edge of Duffield Park where he erected a manor house known as "Johnstown". On May 10th 1802 James Irvine built his home at what is now Race Street in what is now downtown Tonawanda; it was his home until his death on October 3rd 1807. In 1811 Henry Dearborn founded Dearborn Academy (now Cathedral Burial Ground), which became one of the first educational institutions in Erie County when it opened its doors on November 12th that year with thirteen students from Canonsburg (now Lackawanna). In 1830 Jonas Silliman purchased 400 acres northwest along Third Avenue in what is now part Ofallon Heights for $1 million dollars which he donated to Erie County for use as agricultural land; this site became known as "Silliman's Hills" after him. The first church building constructed inTonawandan was Methodist Episcopal Church located at Second Street and State Road 488 about 1850 north east cornering Fifth Avenue westward from Ontario Boulevard; this structure served until 1862 when another Methodist EpiscopalChurch was built south side Third Ave eastward from Ontario Boulevard also serving until 1862 when it burned down due to fire damage only weeks after its erection! Presbyterian Church founded by Rev David Duncan near Third Avenue east side Third Ave together with First PresbyterianChurch - both churches being destroyed by fire just days apart! In 1814-1825 various committees were formed to assess land acquisitions made during America's War for Independence; one such committee recommended that Albany sell all but 3 square miles of western Ontario Territory (now Monroe County) to raise money for war purposes; another committee assessed land grants near Niagara Falls valued at $1 million dollars; yet another committee probated claims making up approximately 8 per cent or 375 families within present-day Erie (New York) Veterans Home Township had been Claimants since 1800s who enjoyed military benefits entitlements common among those claiming lands under auspices of Manifest Destiny On July 24th Napoleon Bonaparte issued his proclamation announcing his rule over all North America following his successful invasion of Spain in 1808 His announcement created increased competition for potential buyers around Great Lakes region with entrepreneurs beginning to file bids for tracts located east of Lake Erie One such bidder was John Glover who purchased 1/4 interest in patent number 548 dated October 15th 1800 from Solomon Rollo Jr., proprietor thereof situated on both sides East Branch Susquehanna River about 9 Miles below Trenton NY thence up said river about 12 Miles thence down said branch about 2 Miles and 27 Yards southwardly thereto being bounded by lot No 4486 given by Ebenezer Herkimer Esqrs Surveyor General August 25th 1800 To Solomon Rollo Jr., surveyor having sold same lot No 4486 aforesaid According to Rollo’s deed he conveyed “land … lying on both sides East Branch Susquehanna River about 9 Miles below TrentonNY thence up said river about 12 Miles thence down said branch about 2 Miles and 27 Yards southwardly thereto being bounded by lot No 4486 given by Ebenezer Herkimer Esqrs Surveyor General August 25th 1800” ThisPurchase is significant as it shows that some landowners had been surveying these lands for years before purchase took place Furthermore rollo appears not have been living permanently on site at this location so there may have been other occupants as well
