Tonawanda is a small town in western New York, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tonawanda–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name means "place where two rivers meet." The townsite was first settled by Germans in 1812 and then by Irish in 1824. The first settler to arrive from Germany, Johann Gottlieb Schneider, built his home on what is now Main Street. German-speaking settlers arrived soon after and started trading goods with the Mohawk River valley. In 1827, an act of Congress designated the area east of the Catskills as a land grant to John Schermerhorn, one of Niagara Falls' founders and one of its leading merchants. In 1830, Schermerhorn married Catharine Stimson and moved to Tonawanda with her; they founded a grocery store on Main Street which became known as "The Stimson Store." By 1840, the town had developed into a busy agricultural center with farms producing hay, cornmeal and other crops. One early resident described Tonawanda as "…a thriving little village about four miles (6 km) square [with] about 350 inhabitants." In 1847-48 there was an epidemic of smallpox that struck the area; many people died from it. In 1850-51 tonawandans built their own water mill on Seneca Creek for grinding flour for local consumption andexport; this mill continued operation until 1955 when it was replaced by a more modern machine shop building on Court Road near present day Town Hall Square. A post office called Tonawanda began serving residents of the town in 1837; it closed in 1865 because no mail could be delivered due to railroad construction downtown! During World War II several Thouars were produced at nearby Niagara Falls's Horseshoe Bend Mine (now part of Ontario Power Generation). Afterward much production ceased because of depleted resources and competition from other mines in New York State during peacetime! The town of Tonawanda was founded in 1792 by the brothers Moses and David Tonawanda. The town was named after Major General John tonawanda, who fought in the Revolutionary War. The first permanent settler in Tonawanda was Nicholas de Vesalius, a Dutchman who built a cabin on what is now the western edge of town. The de Vesalius cabin served as the nucleus for what would becomeTonawanda's first permanent settlers. Over time, many other European immigrants also arrived in Tonawanda, including Germans, Irishmen, Italians, and Poles. In 1814,odus Englishman James A. Woolcott erected the first school building in Tonawanda. In 1827-28, an iron bridge over the Susquehanna River were constructed by local farmer George Prentiss to connect Tonawandamto nearby villages. This bridge became one of the most important transportation arteries in rural New York during this era. In 1842-43, another immigrant group arrived in Tonawanda - Methodist ministers from Georgia who had been expelled from their church back home by missionarieservatives.. These Methodists quickly established themselves as one of the largest Protestant denominations in New York County and started to build churches and schools throughout much of rural Finger Lakes County. One ofTonawaandamsto gain notoriety during this period was its role as a major training ground for Union soldiers during World War II . Many local entrepreneurs joined forces with war production companies to supply goods necessary for military production such as food and ammunition; some even managed to achieve national attention through their businesses (e.g., entrepreneur Joseph Tompkins ran a munitions mill that produced tens of millions of rounds of ammunition).
