Tonawanda is a small town in central New York, United States. The population was 9,521 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by German immigrants in 1788 and became a part of Erie County in 1814. It was consolidated with Niagara County in 1865 and had a population of 10,811 at the 2000 census. Tonawanda has two schools: Tonawanda High School and Tonawanda Intermediate School. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Westphalia, Germany in 1788. They founded a community called "Thornbush" on the east side of present-day State Route 6 near what is now Massena Road. In 1814, they moved to what is now north end of town and named it "Tonawanda." The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 made transportation available for more people and led to an increase in business activity; tonnawa merchants started shipping goods down the canal from Buffalo to Niagara Falls. On July 20, 1865, Tonawanda became one of several towns within Niagara County when it merged with neighboring Town of Canastota; both towns were located on the east side of present-day US 6 betweenBuffalo and Canastota rapids (now known as Acme Lake). At its merger, Tonawanda had a population of 10,811 people living in 527 businesses including 45 churches and 11 educational institutions serving grades K-12th grade students including three high schools—Tonawanda High School (opened 1912), Canastota Intermediate School (1865), and Webster Middle School (1929)—as well as three Technical Institute schools which offered vocational training during those early years: Carpenters’ Institute (1886), Mirror Laborers' Institute (1892), and Weavers' Guild Schools for Girls(1910).
