Tonawanda is a city in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 9,788 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent American settlers in what is now Tonawanda were French colonists who traveled to this area in 1755 and 1756. On February 12, 1768, the village of Tonawanda was laid out by Col. George Washington and Lt.-Colonel Nicholas Justus of the Pennsylvania militia as part of an effort to improve military logistics for Fort Niagara on Lake Ontario. The original town name was Wappingers Falls because of a falls just north of where it stands today (Wappingers Creek flows through the present-day city). In 1834, when Buffalo became a city and limits were extended eastward to include most of Niagara Falls county including Tonawanda, Wappingers Falls became an integral part of Buffalo with its own post office and jail. In 1892–1893 construction began on the Erie Canal which would connectBuffalo with Montreal via Lockport; however due to financial difficulties both cities abandoned their plans for canal projects in 1893. The site where Tonawanda now stands was once home to several breweries which operated until Prohibition made these businesses illegal in America. During World War II there was significant production at Canalside munitions plant located just northwest of downtown Tonawanda near current day State Street & Park Avenue (formerly Canalside Parkway). This plant produced weapons such as artillery shells and napalm during World War II along with other Allied war efforts such as aircraft production at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base from 1942-1945 and Cold War ballistic missiles development at Vandenberg AFB from 1958-1962; all within boundaries then extending into Niagara County including Tonawanda proper! The Canalside complex closed down following the war but portions have been redeveloped into mixed use buildings overlooking downtown since then including some housing units still currently under construction! With so much history associated with this place it’s no wonder that it has become known as one of Americas most historical communities!
The first white settlers in the area were the Dutch who arrived in 1624. The area became part of New York State in 1785. In 1814, the United States bought what is now Tonawanda County from the Dutch and renamed it after General Arthur Clinton (1755-1828).
