The first Europeans to visit Tonawanda were Dutch traders in 1614 who called it "Watervliet". In 1726 an Englishman by the name of De Vere named it "Tonawanda" after his home town in England. The first European settler arrived in 1769, when Abraham Lincoln came from England with his family and founded a cabin on what is now Main Street. A post office was established here in 1772 and remained operational until 1815. In 1830, John Nelson opened a gristmill on the river which became one of Tonawanda's most important businesses for many years. In 1859,lime began flowing from nearby Niagara Falls into the river and formed a raging stream that quickly carved out an impassable gorge near today's Main Streetbridge (now known as Deodar Avenue). To prevent this from happening, engineers built several dams upstream including one at present-day Lockport which forms the eastern border of Tonawanda village . In 1892 local resident Isaac Nolde built a sawmill on Clinton Road between Main and Deodar Avenues to serve as an early predecessor to what became Today's main shopping district - Sleepy Hollow Mall - across Clinton Road from current day School District office building #2 (now Empire State Development) back then just north side of current day US Route 20 / International Drive opposite current day Dunkin' Donuts store complex across road east of school #1 south side). In 1825, the area of what is now Tonawanda was part of the much larger village of Utica. By 1830, Utica had disbanded and its lands became part of the new town of Tonawanda. The first post office in Tonawanda was established in 1836. In 1855, the town was renamed to Buffalo and then Buffalo Niagara grant in honor of General George Washington's visit to that city two years earlier. In 1861, Buffalo Niagara grant became a county by act of the New York State Legislature. The Erie Canal was completed through Tonawanda in 1825 and soon began carrying passengers and goods between Buffalo andNiagara Falls. The canal created a major commercial center around which development took place;Tonawanda prospered as an agricultural center due to its close proximity to canalside markets. Manufacturing also increased during this time as transportation improved and manufacturing advances became available at lower costs than raw materials from other parts of the United States. "The townsite on Canalside (now calledTonawanda) sprang up rapidly because it was near two important waterways: one running southward from Niagara Falls along the Erie Canal and another running northward along Mohawk River."
