This enterprise prospered until 1879 when a fire destroyed most of the buildings on the property. Dixon's Store reopened soon after with new equipment and increased sales due to its location near marketplaces throughoutNiagara County. By 1870, Dixon's Store had become one of tonawandans primary commercial thoroughfares with more than 20 stores operating within its boundaries alone In 1892, Samuel Morse donated $5,000 towards construction of a school building which would serve as both education center for locals and also act as an engineering laboratory for developing telephone systems across America The first class graduated from high school here in 1896 . A post office operated at #2 Main Street from 1893 until 1912; it served as both an mail carrier (mail service started on January 1st 1893) as well as being used for general storage during times when there were no streetcars available In 1913-1914 two new schools were built: West Side School (now Livingston High School) on Eighth Avenue North between Main St & Ninth St., later renamed East Side School (now Harrison High School), while Northside School became Southside School following annexation by neighboring towns . The village of Tonawanda was first settled in 1755 by the Mohawk Tribe. The village prospered due to its location near the Susquehanna River and the fur trade. In 1814, the United States acquired land from the Mohawk Tribe to create a military post on what is now Niagara Falls. As part of this Purchase, Congress allocated two square miles (0.8 km2) of land to be populated by American Indians, including Tonawanda. In 1828, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army passed through Tonawanda on its way upriver to attack Fort Erie. The Battle of Antietam occurred nearby, and as a result of the battle, many Americans were killed or wounded. Aftermath of the battle led to increased Native American resistance against white settlers in what is known as Indian Territory, which eventually resulted in Ulysses S. Grant's occupation of that area in 1863. In 1850, when Buffalo Bayou was diverted southward for irrigation purposes at Buffalo Gap instead of continue flowing through Tonawanda Creek into Lake Ontario as intended, water began seeping out from under homes and businesses between Tonawanda and Barker Road in today's central business district (CBD). By 1853-5 most residents had moved away due to bad water conditions and lack of food storage capacity; however some remained until after World War II when it was drained for reclamation purposes.
