After the battle, some of Custer's troopers took refuge at the armory where they stockpiled firearms. In 1826, Captain John Paine built a gunnery school in Tonawanda which became one of the leading schools for naval artillery instruction in America. Tonawanda is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,569 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the four towns in Erie County. The other three are Buffalo, Niagara Falls and Rochester. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Tonawanda were French traders and missionaries who founded a mission on the site of present-day Tonawanda in 1724. In 1814, as part of an effort to make way for General James Wilkinson's army as it crossed over from Canada into New York state, the British burned down the mission and all but two of its buildings. However, a group of local residents rebuilt it and named it after their patron saint: St. John Baptist de Sales (1723–1807). In 1825, when Erie county was created from parts of Albany and Western New York, Tonawanda became one of its first villages. It had a population of 350 people; by 1860 that number had increased to 1,500 people. In 1873, construction began on what would become the city hall building which still stands today; this was followed by other major projects including a school (1875), churches (1885), post office (1913) and banks (1927). During World War II much activity took place within the city limits; businesses such as munitions plants produced large quantities of waste that had to be disposed off through various means such as burning or staining with naphthalene paint before they could be processed into usable objects again.
