Tonawanda was a hamlet located in the town of Tonawanda, New York. It was part of the Clinton County community of Kokomo and at one time had a population of 100. The first settler in Tonawanda was George Schmitz, who moved from Bohemia in 1795. In 1808, John Purdy settled there and built the first store on the current site of Tonawanda Hall. The development of transportation allowed for more people to move to Tonawanda and it became a center for agricultural production. During World War II, Tonawanda served as an important airfield and manufacturing center for munitions research by Boeing. The town's economy declined after the war but has since regained some vitality with its own high school, business districts, and other initiatives.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Dutch colonists in 1624. The area was part of the Mohawk Nation until 1764 when it became part of the Province of New York. In 1814, Albany became the capital of New York and Tonawanda came under its jurisdiction. On July 1, 1825, a act was passed by the New York State Legislature which created the Town of Tonawanda and transferred all municipal powers from Albany to it. On February 15, 1830, an act was passed by another New York State Legislature which created Villa Park on Lake Ontario and annexed parts of what is nowTonawanda County into that new municipality. The first mills in Tonawanda were built by James Fenton around 1784-85. They produced flour for local consumption and also exported flour to other parts of America. Fenton’s sons continued their father’s milling business until 1886 when they partnered with George Hemsley Jr., who ran the company until his death in 1898. Over time, other companies have been established inTonawanda such as Wards Brothers Chemical Company (1906-present), Alfred Ives Paper & Plastic Corporation (1977-1996) and First Niagara Financial Corporation (1991-2004). In remarks made at a town meeting on April 12, 1917, Mayor John P Taylor said that "…the present situation is one where we must do something about our water supply." He identified two main problems - lack of available water resources and high demand from industry for water supplies due to increases in population density and industrial development within walking distance thereof." On October 10th 1907 an agreement had been reached between representatives from Buffalo Water Works Company Limited (BWCL)and local farmers to build a desalination plant at North Tonawanda Creek near present day Scarsdale; BWCL would provide engineering assistance while farmers provided land and labor for construction purposes beginning in 1908 . Construction began on November 4th 1909 but only completed portions of the plant are extant today; these include three large cisterns roofed over with metal sheets that acted as filters during operation . In 1916–17 there were plans for a second plant but this never materialized . BWCL sold its interest in the project to Syracuse Water Supply Co Ltd.,formed primarily out of financial desperation caused by World War I shortages
