Tonawanda is a city in New York State, United States. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Tonawanda County. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Mohawk word tonkawa or "big house." The first permanent settler in what is now Tonawanda was a party of French colonists led by Pierre-Jacques Marquette in 1764. They erected a small stockade on the north side of current-day Main Street just east of present-day Garrison Avenue and named it Fort Niagara after King George III's military post at Niagara Falls. In 1814, an act of the New York state legislature designated land west of Utica as part of the town of Tonawanda to be called Harrisonburg because Major General Andrew Harrison had recently moved his headquarters there from Canisius (now Buffalo). The townspeople changed their name to Tonawanda on July 1, 1814. In 1818, Indian trader Isaac Brock built a log cabin near current day Watkins Glen Boulevard and inherited rights to its patent from his father, James Brock Jr.. He named it Griggs Manor after himself and his own family; later he sold most rights to other owners. In 1830, he donated land east of Utica for what is now Griggs Park and developed it into gristmills that produced flour for local markets until 1862 when prohibition made farming impossible without explosives. Tonawanda was a small town in upstate New York, located near the border of Ontario and Quebec. At the time of its founding in 1804, it was one of the most northerly settlements on Long Island. The first white settlers in what is now Tonawanda were French Canadians who arrived in 1786. They began to clear land for agriculture and built log cabins around 1792. A post office was established at Tonawanda in 1804, and by 1814 there were twenty-six residents living there. In 1824, John Denton founded the village of Aurora on nearby East Main Street, which became an adjacent incorporated village in 1835. Aurora was abandoned during the 1830s because no one wanted to live near where corn could be grown or hunted according to local legend. A new settlement called West Aurora was established in 1840 by Dutch farmers along newly laid out roads west of present-day Tonawanda creek; this community continued until 1896 when it merged with present-day Aurora to form what is nowTonawanda Township 13 miles north of Syracuse on State Route 10/12 east of Tioga Falls.. In 1863 James Biddle organized a wagon road from Scranton over Canada Pass into Canada and then upriver into what is now Niagara County; he named his route "Biddle's Path." For many years this wagon road served as a main artery between Albany and Buffalo through what is now western New York City and central Ontario (now Erie County). During Reconstruction Era period (1865–1867) following American Civil War, people from Tonawanda relocated to Buffalo because Buffalo had become ""the breadbasket"of America." Some families returned after being appointed as United States officials or surveyors working for Ulysses S Grant's General Service Board in southeastern Pennsylvania; others took advantage of opportunities created by Reconstruction Acts such as low prices for food due to lack of available markets elsewhere, job security following war termination, amnesty granted under Lincoln Executive Order 11491 providing citizens protection from discrimination upon returning home
The town of Tonawanda, New York was founded in 1795 by Loyalist settlers from the Province of Upper Canada. The town became a part of the United States in 1821 and was named for General George Washington. It was annexed to the city of Buffalo in 1827.
