Tonawanda is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tonawanda" comes from the Mohawk word toon (a place) and wanda (a woman). The first European to visit Tonawanda was Giovanni Boccanegra in 1614. The area now known as Tonawanda was first settled by Germans in 1825. In 1836, John Crile founded the village of Dunkirk on the south side of Niagara River. In 1837, James Prentice built a sawmill and millrace west of Dunkirk on what is now Main Street. In 1850,William Halsey erected a gristmill on present-day Elmira Road east of Dunkirk. A post office was established at Dunkirk in 1851, and remained in operation until 1918. In 1865, Charles Fenton constructed a water tower on Village Green which still stands today. On July 6th 1870, Tonawanda became one of several towns within the new Erie County when it was created from parts of Ontario County and Chemung County.. On November 4th 1886 Charles Fenton donated land for a public school system which would eventually be named after him – Fenton School District #2. On January 1st 1893 Pearl Buck attended an agricultural show at Syracuse University and wrote her Pulitzer Prize winning novel "The Grapes Of Wrath". This event helped launch American education reform efforts that continue to this day; however it actually originated with schools in England that were teaching Agricultural Science during this time! On October 7th 1902 all residents of Dunkirk voted to annex into Tonawanda Township #1 effective November 1st 1902 following a petition drive led by Representative Willis Swayne Jr.. At this time there were only three stores open in downtown Tonawanda: Mrs Smith’s grocery store (now known as Friendship Market), Mr Roberts’ bakery (now known as Allentown Bakery), and Mr Kapp’s barber shop (now known as Dutch Bros Barber Shop). With over 4500 total acres owned by local farmers within township boundaries at this time (!), incorporation represented an immense opportunity for economic development for those living within its borders given that they had unrestricted access to good soil, ample water resources & transportation available right here! As early as 1913 there were plans underway to build both a flour elevator & electric lights across Main Street – these projects never materialized though due largely to funding shortages experienced throughout WWI (& beyond!). By 1922 over 50 businesses had opened up within township limits providing much needed employment opportunities for our citizens! What followed during WWII wasn’t so kind however with many homes destroyed or left uninhabitable due to bombing raids or natural disasters such as floods etc… Afterward many residents decided their best courseof action would beto move outcentrally & resettle elsewhere… However with current zoning laws limiting further growth outside city limits (& particularly along I-87), some semblance of stability has yetTo returnalbeit slowly& unevenly! TodayTonawandans enjoy great benefits resulting from being located just minutes away from Buffalo Niagara Falls containing world renowned attractions like Amway Center & Six Flags Over Niagara - two must see destinations any visitor should experience no matter where they are located! The area was part of the Shawnee Nation and was considered off limits for white settlers. This made it an ideal place for the Erie Canal Company to build its first locks on the Chenango River. The company also constructed a road from Buffalo to Tonawanda in order to easier transportation of goods and passengers. The town began to grow rapidly, thanks in part to this development and other initiatives by the company. By 1840, Tonawanda had become one of the most populous places in upstate New York. As businesses grew and people moved into the area, social tensions began to develop. In particular, there were concerns about white supremacy and how it was being expressed through economic activity. In 1847, a group of men led by George Armstrong Custer attacked a Native American village in what is now Cheyenne County. This event is often cited as one of the earliest examples of warfare between white settlers and Native Americans. Despite these challenges,Tonawanda continued to grow rapidly over the years. By 1860, it had reached its current population size of over 100,000 people. It remained an important cultural center throughout much of Upstate New York until after World War II when suburbanization took hold."
