Tonawanda is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The population was 11,541 at the 2010 census. Tonawanda is part of the Eastchester–Schenectady–Troy Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Tonawanda was established in 1814 by the merger of two other towns, West tonawanda and Canastota. It was named for Jameson Tonawanda (1768-1836), an Indian trader and landowner who donated land to the town. The first store opened in 1815 and the first post office in 1816. In 1830, a sawmill started operation and soon became one of the largest employers in Tonawanda. In 1850, a gristmill followed and production soared until it closed in 1907 due to competition from mills in nearby Schenectady and Albany. A new mill was built on the east side of town between 1905 and 1912 by local entrepreneur John Larkin as an addition to his paper manufacturing empire which included mills at White Plains Junction (now part of Troy) and Batavia (now Buffalo). The mill continued operations until it closed in 1978 after being sold to Thompson Paper Products Inc., which operated it until 1984 when it was acquired by Mohawk Paper Corporation. The mill's large frame buildings still stand today on Main Street near where its namesake river once flowed through town – now used as apartments or commercial space. In 1957,Tonawanda lost its status as an agricultural center when milking cows stopped being done here because more efficient machines were available for this task downstream at Oneida Lake National Wildlife Refuge; however, dairy farming continues to be a significant industry here today with about 10% of Tonawanda's total employment dedicated to this activity according to 2017 figures released by village officials
