Tonawanda is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,209 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern border of the Town of Tonawanda and is south of Niagara Falls. The first settler in what is now Tonawanda was John Purdy in 1795. There were two other early settlers: Elijah Tuttle and Nicholas Larkin. In 1810, land was bought by David Levy from Nicholas Larkin for $1800. In 1812, a post office was established at Tonawanda and the name it used until 1861 when it changed to Wananta. In 1814, Andrew Jarratt built a log cabin on his farm north of town while he served as village trustee. A year later he donated land to the village for an academy which would become Wananta Academy School District No 1 - now Wananta-Kingston High School - and named it after him. In 1825, Adam Yates purchased part of the present site of Wananta from Andrew Jarratt for $2000 dollars plus expenses incurred building a road between Buffalo and Rochester that became known as Yates Road. The village then had three stores: Drury’s Store (now Wananta-Kingston Market), Crossroads Store (now First Presbyterian Church), and Yates’ store (now Friendship Baptist Church). In 1830, George Waring erected a mill on stream power near present day Main Street just east of the current park line which became known as Waring's Mills Park (). The first school in town was also founded in 1830; this was Coles Female Academy which eventually merged withWananta Academy School District No 1 to form Wananta-Kingston High School in 1959 (). In 1836, James Eaves developed property southwest of present day Main Street between Beaver Dam Creek and Buffalo Lake into what is now known as Eaves Landing (), naming it after himself (). In 1840–41 Ebenezer Morse built a sawmill on river power about one mile northeast of today's intersection of Route 9W and Route 8W across frompresent day Harbor Beach Drive () which became known as Morse Sawmills Park (). After years of development work by several hands including George Bemis who also owned land adjacent to whereMorse Sawmills Park sits today (), Wanata had its first public house or tavern called The White Hart Inn () operated by WM Fenton et al., proprietors thereof since 1840 or so (). That establishment closed around 1865 but reopened again soon afterwards under new management before finally closing permanently around 1888 due to high competition among innkeepers – another indication that taverns were becoming more uncommon during this time frame outside major cities like Buffalo NY). This gives us an idea that there must have been some sorta organized movement taking place back then towards establishing pub/tavern systems within villages throughout New York State! Another interesting fact about this particular pub/tavern system is that many times these establishments would become dormant or go outof business for various reasons such as being too competitive against other local businesses or simply not meeting enough demand due to changing demographics within rural areas etc.). Tonawanda is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 6,763 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Tonawanda was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Tonna" after his hometown of Torre del Greco in Italy. The first permanent settler in Tonawanda was John Goodsell who arrived in 1795 and platted the town around 1800 on land that he had bought from the Mohawk Nation for $10 per acre. In 1807, under pressure from Great Britain as a result of the War of 1812, New York passed an act providing for militaryaughlinment points along the Canadian border and Goodsell sold his share to Jens Jakobsen for $2,000. In 1827, James Monroe became President of the United States and appointed Cornelius Vanderbilt as Secretary of War with authority to build a road from Dunkirk on Long Island through Tonawanda into Canada (the Erie Canal). In 1830-31 Vanderbilt built two roads: one led east to Schenectady then south to Buffalo while another ran northwest from Tonawanda via Oneida Lake and up Two Hills Creek until it reached Seneca Lake near Geneva; this road became known as State Route 9A (NY 9A). In 1830-31 also construction began on what would become Interstate 90 but due to financial difficulties this project too failed when finished in1941. During World War II many factories were closed down by orders from Roosevelt because they could not provide munitions necessary for war effort; these factories included Fordham Carriage Works and American Can Company which were located just north of Tonawanda in Onondaga County now part of Syracuse. Most production stopped when America entered World War II but some continued until 1945 such as Rankin's Brewery which produced 5 million gallons of beer per week duringWWII. After America entered World War II there was much demand for aluminum products coming out of Japan so many plants were closed including those producing aluminum cans which ceased production in 1951 according AfterwardTonawanda experienced economic decline starting with manufacturing shutdowns followed by declines in population growth rate (-6%) and jobs (+5%). However attempts have been made over recent years by local officials to revive its economy by creating new businesses or developing new industries such as biotechnology or tourism based upon relationships formed with major players like Carrier Corporation or Genzyme Incorporated

In 1830, the Erie Canal was completed and tonawandans began to benefit from its benefits. As more and more people came to live in the town, businesses mushroomed and Tonawanda became one of the most prosperous towns in New York County. By 1860, however, tonawandans were becoming increasingly dissatisfied with their government and there was growing unrest throughout the community. In 1865, local officials decided to secede from New York City and form their own town government. This event is generally considered to be the beginning of Tonawanda's decline as a commercial center due to competition from other communities in nearby Buffalo and Rochester. However, despite this setback,Tonawanda continued to grow rapidly until it reached its peak around 1900-1910 when it experienced an economic downturn due to various factors including prohibitionism; World War I; machine production; immigration;the Depression;and new technologies such as television). However since then things have slowly slips away for Tonawa Valley as successive waves of newcomers have replaced those who left during previous waves of population growth - leading eventually to what is now known as "a dyingtown".
