Tonawanda is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,748. The name comes from one of the Susquehanna River's tributaries and means "place of the Tonawanda people." The first European to visit what is now Tonawanda was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1455. A post office called Tonawanda was established in 1814, and remained in operation until 1955. The community began as a small Indian village on an oxcart track south of present-day Buffalo Falls. By 1800, however, the area had developed into a large town with over 10 thousand residents. The townsfolk erected a stockade around their village during the French and Indian War (1756-1763). It was not until after the war that they started trading with other parts of New York State and brought in goods such as lumber and furs from Canada. In 1824, Anthony Fenton bought 5 acres (20 hectares) east of present-day Tonawanda for $2 per acre (0.8 ha). He founded Fenton Farms which still operates today as a vegetable farm and cooperative grocery store. Over time many entrepreneurs came to business in what is now Tonawanda; among them were Hiram Sibley who built Sibley's Store at 424 Main Street in 1868; Amos Demarest who opened Demarest Brothers Brewery at 501 Main Street; Elisha Gray who built Gray's grocery store on Clinton Avenue between Main Street and Eighth Avenue; Augustus Holmes Jr., who built Holmes Hardware on First Avenue between Ninth Avenue and Tenth Avenue; Solomon Hennepin arrived here about 1830 to build his millrace known as Hartland Corners near where First Avenue meets Tenth Avenue; Isaac Brockman arrived about 1840 to open Brockman's Furniture Store at 605 Sixth Ave.; James Wickersham arrived about 1850 to open Wickersham Bros. Lumber Company at 8th Ave./Hudson St.; John Sheahan also came early about 1850s but soon left because he didn't like living on corn mush all season long The first post office opened in 1814:ontawa@mail4all . In 1865, it moved its operations to new building located north of downtown which served as both Post Office & Courthouse until 1915 when it burned down In 1881 local school Board closed schools due to lack of funding In 1895 local school Board reopened schools due to increased enrollment & changed name back to "Tonawanda Central School" It wasn't until 1925 when another roundabout road connected Tonawanda with Buffalo & by 1930 this connection had been replaced by Route 9A which paralleled Mohawk River

Tonawanda is a small town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 4,524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tonawanda-Rome-Schenectady, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Tonawanda was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. The area that now makes up Tonawanda was inhabited by several hundred Native American tribes before Europeans arrived in 1614 from Connecticut and Massachusetts as part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. In 1764, John Graves Simcoe became the first British governor of Canada when he took over from Sir George Washington as England's commander in North America after the French and Indian War ended. On October 20, 1764,simcoe issued Order No. 8 which led to the founding of Tonawanda by settlers George Armstrong Crouse and his brother Philip Crouse on December 5th. In 1801, Anthony Wayne founded a school system here for students in rural Chenango County while also running an agricultural business with his brother James Wayne; this began what would become one of Main Street's most successful businesses still going strong today (the Wayne Farm Market). In 1809–10 traders James Kapp and Jacob Riis came through Chenango County on their way to Buffalo Niagara Falls selling goods such as lumber and hardware to farmers along the Niagara River Chain; they stopped at Tonawanda on their way back downriver about two weeks later for dinner at Anthony Wayne's home where they met local farmer Nicholas Coles who invited them into his home for dinner that night; Kapp and Riis were so impressed with Coles' hospitality that they decided to stay the night instead of continuing their journey downriver which would have required crossing overonto Canadian soil territory then under British control. In 1825 a group including Nathan Phillips Jr., abolitionist Andrew Johnson Sr., lawyer Edward Everett Hale and others traveled here from Schenectady during Great Britain's Grenville period seeking independence from Britain; Phillips helped found "The Patriot" newspaper which served as its headquarters until it burned down in 1848 during lockouts by British troops trying to collect dues from village residentsoudeciding not to support independence efforts which had taken place earlier that year; following the fire President James Ketchum appointed Phillipsmitted him to join his cabinet as Postmaster General despite public opposition locally due largelyto Phillips' fiery speeches against British colonials rule elsewhere in New York state.; however soon afterward Philips resigned due PRESSURE FROM THE BRITISH LABOR AND INDUSTRY TO CONCiliate WITH GREAT BRITAIN HAD FAR OUTstripped HIS OWN WHAT WAS NOT REALLY A POLITICAL REASONING AT THAT TIME.; thereafter only men over 21 could hold any political office inside Great Britain excepting lieutenant governors who were appointed by Queen Victoria with her consent.; tonawandans generally did not hold political office outside their own town until well into the twentieth century
The town of Tonawanda, New York was founded in 1785 by General George Clinton. The village grew up around the courthouse, which was first built in 1784. It became a borough in 1834 and an incorporated city in 1898. In 1917, the United States entered World War I andTonawanda played an important role as a supply center for the war effort. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth and development, culminating in its incorporation as a state-level city in 1922. The population of Tonawanda reached over 100,000 by 1930 and it ceased to be a borough until 1975.
