Tonawanda is a small town in the Hudson Valley of New York. The population was 8,835 at the 2010 census. It is located in Erie County and is within the Tonawanda-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Tonawanda was Nicholas Sayre in 1736. The name probably comes from a word meaning "place for fishing." In 1802, John Stephenson purchased the land that makes up present-day Tonawanda from Nicholas Sayre and erected an early frame house on it. He also built a gristmill on the stream that flows through town. In 1803, George Clinton bought Stephenson's deed and added to it two lots for $5 each which he named Clinton Hill and Albany Hill. In 1805, Washington Irving moved to Tonawanda with his family from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and began purchasing land hereabouts including some of what is now our village site; he platted out Lots 4 & 5 (now parts of Watertown) on which his home stands today. In 1815, John Purdy settled here after moving from Baldwinsville, New York due to political unrest over theacking of Native American lands by British settlers. He erected a log cabin near where he currently lives on Fifth Street West about one mile west of present-day Tonawanda High School football field; it still stands as one of only a few remaining structures dating back to this time period in town. The first school teaching in what is now Tonawanda took place in 1830 when Revd Daniel Webster offered instruction to farming families living around him while he awaited appointment as pastor at nearby Elmira Congregational Church; classes continued until 1834 when Reverend Webster moved to Syracuse and resumed instruction there at Elmira's new church building before returning to live permanently intonated here about 1870 or so AHCF record). A post office called "Tonawanda" was established at this location on July 10, 1840 by order of President James Ketchum as part of operation #1of Ulysses S Grant’s “New York Post Office System” - an effort sponsored by then Governor Andrew Johnson To make available mail services between Utica (northwest corner), Rochester (southwest corner), Buffalo (northeast corner), Yonkers (eastern edge) and points beyond via stagecoach or faster wagon routes off the main road network then existing at that time! In 1861 Colonel Enoch Pratt opened up a branch store here supplying troops stationed alongonders United States during War Of The Rebellion having previously organized local grocery stores wagons coming into town bringing produce etc.; Henceforth known as Pratt's Supermarket! After Over 200 years later we have its current structure complete with original flooring &ateground countertops thruout... traces left behind even including old grindstones used for grinding coffee beans! In 1777, the first permanent British settlement in what is now upstate New York was founded at Tonawanda. The town became a part of the Province of New York under English rule and was renamed Niagara in 1814. In 1818, the province was restructured and Tonawanda lost its status as a separate municipality. However, it continued to be governed by a board of trustees until 1898. Tonawanda's history can be traced back to several sources including the Dutch colony of New Netherland which settled there in 1624. A smallpox epidemic that struck the colony in 1635 caused many deaths and left behind a large population of Native Americans who were able to build up their own society. Afterward, English settlers began arriving in increasing numbers and by 1776, there were over 100 people living in Tonawanda. The British government awarded land grants to various settlers for farming purposes and soon after, an Anglican church was built which served as the town's first schoolhouse. The early years of Tonawanda were difficult because access to water resources was limited and most residents relied on animal husbandry for their food supply. However, through hard work and determination, some residents managed to build up an impressive agricultural infrastructure that continues to this day. A significant event fromTonawanda's early days took place when John Patton arrived with his brigade from Canada on July 12, 1778 during the American Revolutionary War - he is considered one of America's earliest military leaders
The town of Tonawanda was chartered in 1718 by the Dutch. It became a part of the United States in 1794. The population growth and development in the area led to increased demand for land, which is why Tonawanda has been an important center for agricultural production ever since. In 1898, the townsite was renamed after General George Washington and his military career.
