Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located about 30 miles east of Albany. It is the only village in the town of Taughannock Falls and has a population of just over 500 people. The first settlers in Tarrytown were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1680. The name "Tarrytown" was probably derived from the Irish word 'tarren', meaning 'a field where oats are grown'. The Village of Tarrytown was chartered on April 20, 1813, by citizens of Albany. In 1865-1866 General Ulysses S. Grant visited Tarrytown and noted that it had "a very fine appearance" due to its well-cultivated land and "fine brick houses". General Grant also visited again during World War II when he became Commanding Officer of First Army Group Southwestern Division ( Tactical) III Corps Area Headquarters at nearby Cold Harbor beachhead before his march through Virginia into North Carolina to join MacArthur's Offensive offensive against Wiley Easley's army at Greensboro/Winston-Salem on December 8th 1945. In 1978-1979 ground was broken on what would become the High School Building which replaced an older building that had been donated by Mrs. Livingston Robbins (the widow of real estate developer Archibald Robbins). In addition to classrooms and gymnasiums there will be an auditorium with a theater screen as well as six apartments facing Clinton Street.. After years of planning and fundraising by many locals including Mayor James Hickey Jr., classes began instruction on August 29th 1979 with Msgr./Revd./Prayer Leader Dr.-Edmond Jaffee officiating.. . . On September 7th 2009 local dignitaries attended commencement exercises enjoyed by approximately 350 graduates both oldtimers like Mr Hickey Sr., mayor James Jaffee Jr., Revd./Prayer Leader Dr.-Edmond Jaffee along with many recent graduates such as Military Policemen Trooper William Moreland Classof2008 & Captain Jesse Kappler Classof2009
