Tarrytown, New York is a small town in upstate New York that sits on the border of Saratoga County and Albany County. The population was 5,867 at the 2010 census. It is considered to be an agricultural and manufacturing center for rural upstate New York. The first scopes were built in Tarrytown about 1815 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, an immigrant from Holland who had arrived in what is now Erie County. By 1830, two other men were also living in Tarrytown, Amos Morse and Elisha Gray. Together they began selling telescopes to farmers and others around the area. In 1834, they built a gristmill near where they operated their business until it burned down in 1855. In 1840, John Cushman bought land east of the village of Geneva in what is now Saratoga County and began to build a mill on it. He named his mill Tarrytown after his birthplace, Tarragona, Spain. By 1846 he had organized the first scopedomuseum in America which still exists today as part of Cornell University's Museum of Natural History (MNH). In 1865, Augustus Pullen donated land north of Geneva to become what is now known asPullen Park. This park was opened to the public in 1889 when it became part of Niagara Falls State Park system which includes Pullen Park itself as well as many other surrounding farms and villages including Carbondale and North Bethlehem within Saratoga County . Many early residents came from eastern Long Island and New York City, including John Copley (1726-1815), one of America's most successful publishers; Cornelius Vanderbilt (1769-1837), founder of Vanderbilt University; Daniel Webster (1804-1865); James K. Polk (1846-1912), Ulysses S. Grant’s Vice President; General Alfred Pleasonton (1800-1873), Union general during Reconstruction; and Judge Augustus Biddle Gee (1810- 1892). A large influx of Italian immigrants followed from 1865 until 1891 when they too departed for North America following a wave of unification across all Italy under Emperor Napoleon II that year led by Giuseppe Garibaldi. Large areas within today's boundaries once comprised part or entirety of Haverhill Township: what are now White Plains, Rye Brook Park, Iona Heights/Islip Pointe/Dover Beach Estates/Dover Village/Northvale Beach etc., as well as present day Valhalla Hills outside town limits on Route 9A just east of its junction with Route 9W just inside town limits on its southern border with Putnam County In 1910 only 5%of total population lived in appx 26 hamlets while 95%of population resided within 3 villages: Hertogenbosch(now Rye), Poughkeepsie(now Kingston) & Woodstock
