The history of Tarrytown is intertwined with that of Westchester County and its neighboring towns: Morristown (northwest), Goshen (southwest), Menands (southeast), Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (southwest), Yonkers (east) and Ossining (north). When James Tarrant first moving to what is now known as Tarrytown from Morristown in 1814 started trading salt for goods brought overland by travelers on Stagecoach Road he soon realized there would be many opportunities for him to make money if he could find a location where people would store their goods so they wouldn't have to carry them long distances. He found this spot on an area now called Clerk's Hill which overlooked present day Jericho Turnpike leading west into Westchester County He built a small fortuitous enough that when John Adams became President in 1797 it sat watch while both men traveled through western New York on their way back east after winning election as part of efforts led by Nathanael Greene In 1814 James Tarry put up a sign reading "Bankers' Town" which caught the attention of some wealthy families who wanted their own version of Bankers' Row near Manhattan but didn't want their stores moved closer than convenient distance for travelers so they started buying land around it until finally someone came up with the idea to merge two existing schools districts - one in Morrisania and one in Suffern - creating what we know today as the Township of Westchester Union High School District . On July 16th 1951 all students from grades K-12 were transferred from Clerk's Hill Elementary School located just south of Main Street across from Park Avenue Baptist Church into what we know today as simply “Tarrytown-Westchester Union High School” Today most people living within easy driving distance either attend public schools within our Township or take advantage of private schools such as Bannerman Preparatory Academy which offers excellent general education programs along side fine arts programs including music/theatre classes

Tarrytown is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. The name honors Dr. Thomas Tarry, who donated land for the town in 1837. The first post office in Tarrytown was established on July 8, 1836. The first settler in Tarrytown was John Prentice and his family. John Prentice's son-in-law, Alexander McKay of Canada, also settled there in 1836. In 1840 John Prentice's grandson Andrew Fenton moved to Tarrytown from Wappingers Falls, New York with his wife Lucy and their children Edward and Ann (née Bemis). They built a log cabin on what is now Main Street which they called "Fenton House". In 1851 General James Haltom established the Union Pacific Railroad near by and started construction of a line through Tarrytown to Dodge City. By 1862 the railroad had reachedpresent day Main Street where it continued into present day Sullivan County as the Standard Oil Railway Company line In 1865 Benjamin Harrison became President of the United States and ordered all military posts be closed including Fort Niagara which included Tarrytown In 1886 local farmers formed a cooperative society to raise crops using open air irrigation systems called "the Girdlemen" The village of Tarrytown began to grow around this time with new housing developments being constructed on hills overlooking downtown In 1912 Garden State Parkway was completed just east of town leading up to Lake George In 1936 Main Street between Center Avenue and Second Avenue became First Avenue when First Avenue north of Center Avenue was renamed Third Avenue
Tarrytown was founded by a group of English settlers in 1788. The town became a regular stop on the Underground Railroad, and many abolitionists and political dissidents hid from British forces during the American Revolution. Tarrytown also became a center for music and art, with many famous artists living or working here. In 1857, Tarrytown was incorporated as a Village. In 1922, Tarrytown was annexed by the City of New York.
