It lies about 8 miles east of Schenectady and about 12 miles west of Albany. The first settlers to Tarrytown were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who arrived from County Louth, Ireland in 1795. They started a logging and farming operation which grew into a large local business. In 1832, James Fenton purchased land near Tarrytowns present day depot for $4,000 and named his new settlement after himself - Fentonstown. The post office was established in 1833, and until 1860 it was called Friendshipville. A Methodist Episcopal church was built in 1865; it burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt and remain operational today as United Methodist Church (UMC). In 1881, John Harkness donated 4 acres (1 km²) of land to the town for development into a park known as Harkness Park; this area now includes much of downtown Tarrytown. The community experienced some very rough times during World War II when many residents left or were forced out due to rationing by the American military. Many businesses closed or had to be turned over to government control during that time period. However, overall, things improved following the war with growth continuing until 1970 when economic recession struck the area hard; however, recent growth has seen more stability and prosperity within Tarrytown once again.
