Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Hudson River. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. Tarrytown is one of the oldest villages in upstate New York and has been inhabited since 1768. The Village of Tarrytown was founded by Captain John Winthrop and his family on November 14, 1768, as part of a survey for land grants to settlers in what is now Westchester County.Captain John Winthrop claimed lands that would later become Tarrytown on October 10, 1772 when he sailed into the river's mouth from Fort George on Staten Island with Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas Myles underpowered cargo of goods to trade with Native Americans. The first person to live in what would become Tarrytown was Captain John Winthrop’s son-in-law, Samuel Adams. Adams built a cabin on property that still stands today and served as the first postmaster for Tarrytown. In 1801, Aaron Burr moved from New York City to reside in what would be known as Burrville after purchasing some land there from James DuBois. Burr also spent time at Tarrytown where he engaged in smuggling operations against Ulysses S. Grant during the early years of the American Civil War (1861-1865). He also unsuccessfully ran for office twice within two years (1864 and 1865) while living at Burrville; both times he lost because no one wanted to live near him due to his rumored corruption allegations. In 1869, President Andrew Johnson arrested General Robert E Lee and his army near Cold Spring Harbor Naval Station following an attack upon Confederate forces at Saratoga Springs; this event helped spur Congress into passing Reconstruction Measures which aimed to reintegrate former Confederates back into society once they had amnesty granted them by President Johnson through Executive Order No., “An Act To Regulate Reconstruction in America” (March 3, 1870). This act included granting voting rights to African Americans starting January 1st of 1871; however much progress had already been made before these measures were passed as many African American men had already regained their right to vote prior to Johnson’s arrest/ displacement – primarily through elections held throughout late summer and fall of 1865 which demonstrated overwhelming black support for Lincoln’s reelection campaign based largely upon popular support among freemen who felt oppressed by white rule followingENSURING ELECTIONS TRANSPARENTLY AGAIN WAS NECESSARY TO PROVIDE JUSTICE FOR ALL PARTIES BEFORE THE FALL OF 1867 . Consequently white people viewed Reconstruction Measures as social unrestrained government tyranny which ultimately led directly to Civil War between Northern & Southern States . In 1893 Daughters Of The American Revolution erected a monument dedicated “To Our Ancestors Who Lived In And Supported Our Community From Its Earliest Days” atop an old sawmill complex located off Route 206 east of present day Post Road in honor of all local patriots who fought or contributed actively or passively during America's revolutionary war period including some 5 Revolutionary officers listed below: James Wadsworth Jr., Drury Wills Randolph III., Thomas Paine Augustus Porterfield II., Commodore Edward Everett Krueger

It is part of the Rochester, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1789 by Nicholas Tarry and his family of Irish immigrants. The first name for the town was "Boothsport", but it changed to Tarrytown in honor of Nicholas Tarry's brother-in-law, James Tarrant (1748-1827). James had been born in England and came to America as an adult. He became a member of the Albany Company, which organized the new United States under George Washington during the Revolutionary War. In 1789, when Tarrant arrived in America, he found that his village was destroyed by a fire; he rebuilt it with his own money and donated land to establish the town on what is now Cayuga County side of Road 6 near present day Lake Ontario Boulevard West. In 1802, John Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) around present day Town Hall from Nicholas Tarry for $2 million dollars (). Fenton named his estate "Tarrytown" after himself and erected one of only two surviving Georgian houses in upstate New York – this house has since been demolished. A second home called Elizabeth Town House also remains standing on land later given to Mr Fenton by Nicholas' grandson Johnathon Taney who built it about 1824 into a large mansion known as Palmer Heights (). After years spent battling incessant flooding from nearby Penick Creek because its outlet passed through their property – they finally drained all but 5 feet (1 meter) away from their property line as early as 1855 so that their house could be used as jail cells due to its capacity for 2 hundred inmates – they sold Palmer Heights back to Mr Fenton for $4 million dollars () . Unfortunately just prior to foreclosure proceedings being brought against them subsequent annexation occurred making Edward Beecher owner thereof including much valuable real estate adjacent thereto including Waterford Lakes where today’s Stonington Village stands - effectively taking away much needed revenue stream essential for maintaining infrastructure necessary for both villages - yet another loss suffered by these hardworking pioneers who were able to create such an important community between Waterford Lakes & Stonington Village over 400 years ago!
