Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, on the border of New York and Vermont. The population was 7,723 at the 2010 census. Tarrytown experienced rapid growth following the end of World War II and began to become well-known as a center for education and research within Weeks science fiction convention being held there each year from 1946 until 1984 when it moved to nearby Schenectady due to hosting difficulties with getting enough hotel space for all attendees. Since 2000, Tarrytown has been home to an annual arts festival which includes over 100 performances by various artists throughout different venues across town including The Albright School of Art (where Perry Mason was filmed).

The town of Tarrytown, New York was first settled in 1785 by Revolutionary War veterans. The town was named for Colonel John Tarry and his regiment, the 3rd Regiment of Foot. The original village of Tarrytown was located on the east side of the Hudson River and consisted of only a few homes. Over time, the village grew and developed into a thriving community with a population of around 100 people in 1805. In 1811, Tarrytown became part of the newly formed County of Albany. With this change in governmental control, Tarrytown experienced its most rapid growth period. By 1830, Tarrytown had reached a peak population size with over 1,500 residents. However, by 1839-1840,Tarytown's population had decreased by 50% due to factors such as disease and economic hardship caused by the Panic of 1837. In 1840-1841,Tarytown again experienced significant growth due to an influx of new settlers from New England who were looking for land near Lake George. This growth led to increased housing prices and more people living in what is now known as downtown Tarrytown. However, by 1850-1851Tarytown's population had once again decreased due to various factors including decreasing demand for housing as well as higher costs associated with imports from abroad (mainly Europe). In 1865-1966Tarrystown merged with neighboring villages Spring Valley and Southold to form a consolidated municipality known as Central New York City which remains today one of the largest communities in upstate New York
