Tarrytown, New York is the oldest continuously inhabited town in upstate New York. It was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624 and then named after Sir James Tarry, an English gentleman who had settled there in 1627. In 1814, Tarrytown became a part of Albany County, New York. The first optical instrument ever made in Tarrytown was a watchmaker’s V-shaped mirror used to fix hours on clocks. The mirror was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and patented on December 12, 1795. A few years later, John Smeaton developed the crescent moon prism for use with telescopes. In 1825, Augustus De Morgan invented the “Morgan clock” which could be set to any time within its twelve hour range by adjusting one or more small dials located around the outside of the case. This innovative clock was built into a beautiful wood frame that still remains in operation today at Trinity College (Cambridge). In 1829–30, Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his son Antoine designed and manufactured the world’s first artificial horoscope using precision lenses and astrolabe mounts; it was called the “Conte horoscope machine” because of its designer—Nicholas-Jacques Conte himself—and its commercial success ran until 1856 when it finally gave way to new technology arising from improved astronomical instruments. A few years later also saw an important development in optics when George Stephenson invented a method for making direct current (DC) lighting systems using copper wires wrapped around rotating cylinders heated by an electric current passing through them – this led eventually to becoming commonplace throughout most parts of North America during the 19th century thanksmainly to Stephenson's work on electrical wiring

Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located about 25 miles north of Albany on the border of Tompkins County and Broome County. The name derives from the Mohawk word "tarry" meaning "to stop." At its peak in 1825, Tarrytown had a population of 2,000 people. Today, it has an estimated population of 100-150 people. The town was settled by Dutch settlers in 1624. It became part of the British colonies through the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. In 1784, Tarrytown was given to Peter Schuyler by Governor George Clinton for his services as a surveyor and landowner in Albany. Schuyler named the town after himself, but later changed it to Tarrytown because he felt that it sounded more rural than Albany. During the Revolutionary War, Tarrytown served as headquarters for Major General James Clinton during his march across New York State from Kingston to Schenectady on November 8th and 9th, 1775. Afterthe war ended, most of the Dutch settlers (except those who remained behind at Fort Orange) emigrated to Pennsylvania or other states where they found new opportunities. In 1825, when Buffalo Trace Distillery opened its doors for business in what is now downtown Tarrytown, many farmers started moving into this developing area around Lake Ontario rather than continue living near their homes upstream on Long Island Sound - which at that time was still part of Great Britain. The Town of Tarrytown was founded in 1748 by the Reverend John Gay. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River and is surrounded by present-day municipalities of Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Dutchess counties. The town had a population of 7,441 in 2000.
