After his escape, Tarrytown became his base of operations for several months before he moved north to Seneca Falls. In 1825, Colonel James Fenton built a log cabin here as a summer headquarters for his command during the Mexican–American War. He named it Fort Fenton after himself and General James Fenton, commander of Union forces in that war. In 1827, Nathaniel Kingsbury sold 2 acres (0.8 hectares) adjacent to present-day Main Street to John Pemberton for $100 It was through Pemberton's efforts that Tarrytown acquired its current name: Tarrytown in honor of Captain John Tryon (1768–1836), one of America's most celebrated military commanders during the revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars and its founder and first mayor (1824–30). Captain Tryon had purchased 1/4 acre (0.2 hectare) on what is now Court Street in 1795 from Nicholas Putnam Sr., also one of America's earliest tavernkeepers and promoters of Italian culture in this newly formed nation outside New England. Tryon erected a wooden sign reading "Welcome To Tarrytown" which still stands today at the corner of Main and Court Streets). Tarrytown is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Yonkers–Nyack– Babylon, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by General Israel Putnam and William Wadsworth in 1795 as a small village on the east bank of the Hudson River. The name means "place where the water flows clear" in Dutch. In 1814 Tarrytown became an incorporated village and in 1846 it became a town. Tarrytown is located on both sides of the river, across from Manhattan to its south and opposite Mount Vernon to its north. The first settler in what would become Tarrytown was Ishmael Putnams son Joshua who arrived with his family in 1795 from Connecticut. Joshua's wife Elizabeth had married him while he served as a soldier during the American Revolution and they had two children: Ishmael and Sally (later Sarah). putnam may have been inspired to found his own settlement after seeing General George Washington's army marching downriver from upstate NY towards Morristown on July 8th, 1794 Joshua's nephew John Putnam also arrived early in 1800 with some land he had acquired from his uncle about ½ mile upstream from where Tarrytown now stands John Putnam built a log cabin near what is now Main Street which served as his home until 1806 when he transferred ownership of it to his nephew Moses Putnam Sr.. Moses Jr.'s daughter-in-law Jemima Lewis operated her father's farmstead on Main Street until her death in 1865 Moses Jr., however took little interest in developing his land so passed it along to one of his grandsons Abijah Lewis who also died without heirs In 1827 three brothers-- Jeremiah, Solomon and Ebenezer-- came overland from England via Albany (New York) and began construction of what would become known as White Plains Road or simply "The Road." They named their new community after their ancestral home seat— Taliaferro Manor— located several miles west of White Plains proper including present day Woodstock before landing there on September 11th 1830 . After arriving they erected fences around their plot of land that extended into present day Tarrytown proper before purchasing some more acreage nearby for $110/acre This purchase included part or all of present-day Broadway between State Route 9A (now called Roosevelt Boulevard) & First Avenue North; parts or all of Third Avenue South between Broadway & Second Avenue North;East Side streets running northeasterly off Fourth Avenue North;and West Side streets running southerly off Fifth Avenue North which formed today’s geographic boundary line between Upper East Harlem & Queens Village beyond which were fields belonging to German immigrants . The majority portion now occupied by Park Slope makes up this final purchase but there remained some open space remaining within our boundaries . On March 3rd 1830 Ebenezer Lewis sold 1/4 acres northwest corner Broadwalk & Third Ave NW for $3500 to Nicholas Biddle who resided there until 1870 . From this date forward development accelerated rapidly within our boundaries making possible today’s plethora Of businesses along 4 blocks long corridor extending easterly from Park Slope To Clinton Hill And back againt 5th Ave N By Waterfront Line
Tarrytown is a hamlet in westernchester county, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the town of Westchester. The first settler in Tarrytown was Nicholas Biddle who arrived in 1785 and built a log cabin on the present site of Tarrytown Lake. He named his Location after Arthur Tarrant who had been one of the founders of London, England. In 1803, Alexander McKay moved to Tarrytown from Scarsdale and began to cultivate corn and market goods here. A Presbyterian minister named John Haywood also settled in Tarrytown in 1806. In 1827, Isaac Merrick built a small gristmill on what is now Elmira Road near what is nowRoute 9 east of Route 7. In 1829-30, James Fenton bought some land east of Route 9 from Andrew Carnegie for $5 per acre and started to develop it into a town called Fentonville which grew up around him. On July 1, 1830, he renamed his new town "Tarrytown" after his birthplace (near Edinburgh), though neverQuite sure why he chose that name or what connection it had with his old home country! By 1840 there were over 200 residents living in Tarrytown proper while scattered throughout its rural surroundings; by 1860 there were only about 40 residents still living in downtown when the community exploded during the American Civil War due to an influx of soldiery seeking shelter from Confederate Genesee County troops stationed nearby at Fort George Hill). However all these new arrivals soon melted away as war expanded rapidly into other parts of New York State - corpses lay unmolested along Elmira Road until1865 when Union forces burned down Fentonville's wooden stockade resulting in much local destruction including most of the homesick soldiers' belongings! During Reconstruction following reconstruction efforts following America's victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 many veterans and their families returned to find their homes destroyed or confiscated by military authorities/soldiers needing housing for their troops as part of reparations payments required under The Treaty Of Paris which ended The American Civil War - most notably those from New York City who found refuge at Fort Hamilton prior to Yankees taking control there several months later (see macgowan massacre). Consequently only a few buildings remain standing today including Merrick's gristmill & chapel; both dating back to before 1860 & possibly built as Response White House type structures for garrison purposes only c1910-1920s ecclectic style (& no evidence that they ever served any religious purpose)
