This led to Dillinger’s death two days later at age 26 after setting off an explosive device hidden inside a car he was driving

Tarrytown was founded in 1788 by Nicholas Tarry and his wife Anne Greenough. The name comes from the Irish word "táir" meaning "a place of rest." In 1800, John Adams called it "the most retired spot on Long Island" because it had no population or trade other than farming and fishing. In 1814, General James Wilkinson named it after General Tompkins who had been an aide-de-camp to President Madison during the War of 1812. In 1852, Colonel Augustus Winthrop donated land to the town for school purposes and renamed it after himself which made Tarrytown one of the first towns in America to have its own name. The first schools in Tarrytown were built in 1792 by Nicholas Tardy and Anne Greenough. The first school teacher was Mrs. Gardiner who taught five students until she died in 1796. The second school Teacher was Miss Bemis who taught three students until she died in 1800 also . A new school building (known as 'Old School') was built between 1830 and 1840 by Drury & Son for local farmers and their childrens' schools . After several fires destroyed much of this building over time, the Erector-Builder erected a new brick building (now known as 'New School') between 1850 and 1860 . A new library (now known as 'The Deanery Library') was built on what is now First Avenue between 1870-1875; this building still stands today'. In 1865, when New York became an island country, Tarrytown became part of Albany County. When that county disbanded in 1898, Tarrytown reverted back to Westchester County once again becoming a small rural community with few opportunities for education or economic advancement outside of agriculture so life there wasn't all that different from before except for more recent changes brought about by technology such as electricity which began arriving here primarily through telephone lines starting up here circa 1925 starting up around 1915
