Tarrytown is a small, historic town located in Westchester County, New York. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the site of Tarrytown College and the birthplace of president James K. Polk. The earliest known residents of what is now Tarrytown were Dutch settlers in 1624-25 who named it after their home town of Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1788, a group of Revolutionary War veterans from Massachusetts founded the village and named it for General Jonathan Stark's headquarters on Long Island Sound near modern-day Rye, New York. The men brought with them over two hundred years of English culture and architecture which can be seen in many local landmarks such as Tarrytown High School and First Presbyterian Church (now Stroudsburg Presbyterian). In 1836, during the term of President John Quincy Adams, Tarrytown became one of six towns in western New York to secede from the United States due to disagreements over representation in Congress. The other five towns were Kingston on Hudson River, Troy on Ontario County's east side, Schenectady on Mohawk Valley's north side, Auburn on Genesee County's west side and Albany on central New York's upstate region. After Adams' death in 1849 the seceding municipalities rejoined the US by 1860; but again had disputes about congressional representation which led to another secession attempt in 1881 which failed; this time by only 4 votes out of more than 1 million cast among all NY townships On July 6th 1861 Tarrytown College was chartered under US Constitution Section 106 as "the first college established by an act passed through both Houses of Congress". On September 26th 1906 its name changed to "Taryton College" after then-Senator Charles Evans Hughes who helped pass that section 106 bill into law. On February 3rd 1938 gradeschool students at TarytonCollege began term with a new building called "The Court House", later renamed Capitol Hill because that was where Ulysses S Grant used hisoffice when he served as President from 1865 until his assassination three years later After World War II most educational institutions shifted away from traditional campuses towards satellite campuses or online courses so that there would be no physical connection between instructor and student except for face-to-face meetings sometimes called “meetings” instead However some colleges like Syracuse University have maintained physical campuses throughout their entire history while others like Brown University have operated largely online

Tarrytown is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albany-Schenectady-Troy metropolitan area. Tarrytown was first settled in 1786 by Ulster Scots immigrants and their families. The name "Tarrytown" derives from the Irish word "tarrough" meaning a little valley or tract of land between two hills. The village was organized as a town on April 6, 1811, by Order of Governor Jay. The original settlers were farmers who had come to purchase land in what is now Tarrytown from English colonists who had conveyed it to them in lieu of cash payments. Christen Church (1785), built on an ancient tannery complex, still stands as one of the most prominent landmarks in town today and can be viewed from almost every direction within its boundaries. One reason for this prominence may be that it served as both a parish seat and meeting place for religious denominations until 1850 when Albany took over that function. During the American Revolutionary War, Tarrytown supplied munitions to the local militia and played an important role in helping to remove George Washington from power after his inauguration as President on March 4, 1789. In recognition of its support for the Revolution, Tarrytown was granted full municipal status by Governor John Johnson on October 1, 1792—the first such grant ever made to any municipality in New York state! Although not destroyed during World War II like much other rural America did, many buildings including Pace Chapel (dedicated 1909) remain standing despite damage caused by bombing raids conducted against Tarrytown during that period; however they are now open to visitors free of charge each day during primary school hours only! In 1812–13 General Israel Putnam fought with distinction at Battle Ramapo which led him to receive an appointment as brigadier general in command of all military forces within three months; he remained with these commands until his death on July 10th 1814 while leading an attack against Fort Higginson near Schuylkill River Valley NY! After putting down several rebellions throughout upstate New York during his term as governor (1815-1910), James Kieft arrived at Tarrytown late one night on November 8th 1830 accompanied by sixty men seeking refuge after being refused entry into Syracuse NY through Buffalo NY’s then unpatrolled frontier! He founded Kieft’s Tavern here which soon became one of central importance within town limits – serving both residents and travelers alike for centuries following! After weekslong planning and constructionWAITING FOR THANKSGIVING DAY BEFORE STARTING THEIR WORK!! The town of Tarrytown was first settled in 1764 by Loyalists who fled the British Revolution. It was named for the Tarrytown River, which runs through the town. The first settler in Tarrytown was Nicholas Herrick. In 1785, John Nicholson bought a tract of land in the town and founded the Nicholson Manufacturing Company. In 1802, George Washington purchased a tract of land in Tarrytown and established nearby Mount Vernon as his presidential home.
