Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located in the Town of White Sands. It was founded by Peter Minuit in 1624. The first settlers were Dutch and English people. Guns were not used for hunting until 1794 when a schoolteacher named Nicholas Perot purchased an arsenal at what is now the Tarrytown Armory. In 1826, Tarrytown became the seat of Rockland County, and the armory became a county courthouse. In 1892, Tarrytown’s post office was moved to White Sands from its original location on Main Street. In 1907, the armory burned down and most of the contents were lost; however, some guns and ammunition survived. In 1924, ownership passed from Rockland County to Central New York State College (now SUNY– Brockport). The college closed in 1966 but kept part of the armory which it used as storage until 1984 when it reopened as part of SUNY–White Sands' history program. Today there are many restaurants and businesses near where cannonballs once peppered walls and floors during gunfights that have been brought back by history buffs who visit the nearby blast site every year on October 26th known as "Gunfire Day." Gunfire Day commemorates one day after each full calendar year since 1794 when an arsenal opened called "The Arsenal" across from present-day Indian Hall on Mountain Road east of I-87 just north of White Sands High School - home to today's American Legion Post #752 with their replica cannons firing over Route 66 while young students view activity sites around town using binoculars!

In 1814, Colonel Moses Chauncey moved his garrison from Fort Niagara into what would be called Tarrytown after its location on the banks of the Rensselaer River. He named it after General Nicholas Saratoga's headquarters at Saratoga Springs in upstate New York where he had been quartered since April 1794 while besieged by British forces near Albany. By 1815, with American troops all over Europe fighting various wars and spending little time in North America, General Pierre Bouquet had assumed control of all French forces west of Lake Ontario and appointed Colonel Chauncey as his aide-de-camp general commanding all aspects of military operations within Canadawestward including Tarrytown where he spent much time riding about on horseback scouting potential battlefield sites! When war began with Mexico in 1846 both sides placed stores along their respective borders but no hostilities occurred until March 25th when Mexican cavalry raided an American trading post near present day Columbia Heights just outside modern Scarsdale Village & Town limits! Just prior to this attack an American partisan group led by Captain John Ransom marched out from behind cover onto Mexican soil & routed more than fifty horses which resulted in several killed & many captured! This event forever changed not only America's relationship with Mexico but also how Americans viewed their southern neighbor! It was not until November 6th 1860 when Abraham Lincoln addressed a joint session of Congress at Morristown before his inauguration as President that tensions between Great Britain and Mexico increased dramatically leading finally to war two days later!!!

It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Tarrytown was John Tappan, who arrived in 1792 with his family from Albany, New York. In 1825, Nicholas Trimble bought land here and built a cabin named "Tarrytown" after his home town of Tappan, Scotland. In 1827-28, John Aiken platted this area as part of what would become Buffalo Township. The first post office opened in Tarrytown on October 26, 1830. In 1836-37, George Brown built an sawmill and grist mill at the junction of Canandaigua Creek and Big Branch River near present day Delaware Avenue and Niagara Street in what would become Niagara County. This mill became one of the largest commercial enterprises in Tarrytown until it closed its doors in 1922 due to lack of demand from customers following the Panic of 1847 which struck western NY hard. WhileLocated around present day Clinton Avenue between Canandaigua Creek and Big Branch River Streets east (north) side - west (south) side were primarily agricultural areas where hay meadows still remain today; these areas are now known as Northside village or Northside Preserve
