Tarrytown is a small town in southeastern New York State. It is situated on the east bank of the Hudson River, about 15 miles (24 km) south of New York City. The population was 12,866 at the 2010 census. The first gun mags were established in Tarrytown in 1868 by Captain John A. Dillingham and his men from the U.S. Army's 9th Infantry Regiment based there during the American Civil War as part of their scout duty. Tarrytown was founded in 1824 as the town of Tarrytown on the eastern shore of Lake Ontario. The name means "place where the water is shallow". The first post office was established in 1827. In 1829, Tarrytown became a village and in 1865 it became a town. The original courthouse building still stands and is used as a library.
Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the shores of Lake George. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Adirondack Park region. A post office called Tarrytown was established in 1811, and remained in operation until 1964. The first settler in Tarrytown was John Morse. In 1814, he and his family built a log cabin on the shores of Lake George which they named "Morse's Meadow". The original courthouse stands today next to the former Methodist church. In 1825, Jonathan Noyes purchased land east of what is now Main Street for $1,000. He erected a large frame house on this land which became known as "Noyes' House". Noyes served as sheriff from 1830 to 1834 and as coroner from 1840 to 1847. In 1860, Isaac Beekman built a sawmill on what is now Middle Road between White Rd. and Seneca Rd., just north of Main Street. This mill continued operating until it burned down in 1934. The townspeople had been using an early form of communication that consisted of firing arrows over a fence into an open field near their homes - this method was known as "the warpath" because it allowed residents to communicate with one another without having to leave their homes or go outside to do so. Over time, this system became less effective due to improved technology and eventually fell out of use entirely by 1960s standards In 1865, Elijah Weems bought some lands belonging to Hiram Pittenger east of present-day Main Street for $5200 dollars (this donation remains unsigned). Weems operated a ferry service across Lake George between Tarrytown and Schenectady until 1870 when he sold his rights back to Pittenger (for $8000). From 1870 through 1920, the weaver cottage owned by Mrs Anna Browning sat atop hill overlooking village center now occupied by First Presbyterian Church . Mrs Browning refused requests from local officials for her cottage be removed during reconstruction efforts following World War II due to its historical significance; after much public outcry she eventually agreed but only removed some exterior features such as rooflines) In 1922–1923 Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney donated four acres (0 hectare) northwest of present-day Second Avenue between Third Ave./Seneca Rd./White Rd., then bounded by Fourth Ave./Third Ave./Second Ave., needed for expansion plans for nearby Watkins Glen racetrack; also given were toolsheds/sheds used byKeepers Of The Woods Preserve adjacent property . Mrs Whitney later donated additional acreage southwesterly along Fourth Ave/Third Ave.(now Seventh Ave.) between Third Ave/Seneca Rd./White Rd., bounded by Fifth Ave./Fourth Ave./Second Av

Tarrytown is a small hamlet in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the town of White Plains and the village of Tarrytown Center. The hamlet was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. It was named for John Tarry, an Englishman who had bought land there in 1628. In 1852, Tarrytown became a part of White Plains and remained so until 1959 when it became its own separate village. The name "Tarrytown" is derived from John's original land grant and is still used today by some residents as their surname. In 1881, the New York Central Railroad built a line through Tarrytown linking it with Yonkers to the south and Schenectady to the north. This line helped make Tarrytown one of the most industrialized areas in upstate New York during this time period. During World War II, many businesses were closed due to wartime shortages but they reopened after the war ended. Many people here trace their ancestry back to these early businesses that have since closed down or been relocated elsewhere in UPstate New York during this time period such as Chrysler Corporation (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), Singer Sewing Machine Company (now Samsara Garment Co.), American Tobacco Company (now Lorillard Tobacco Inc.), ExxonMobil Refinery etc.. Today, much of what once made up these businesses has moved away or been replaced by more modern venues such as restaurants and stores along Main Street which runs through TaryTown center; however some old buildings remain including Raymond's grocery store which serve local cuisine from scratch; Cash & Carry convenience store located on Route 9A near Main Street; First National Bank building located on Route 9A between Third Street and Second Street; Jardine Insurance Agency building located on Third Avenue between First Street and Second Street; Hennepin Furniture Store building located on First Avenue between Fourth Street and Third Street; Stroud Tire & Rubber Plant located on Fifth Avenue between State Highway 7Gand Seventh Streets).
The town of Tarrytown, New York, was founded in 1788 by General George Washington and his forces during the American Revolution. The community was named after Lieutenant Colonel James Tarry, who had been instrumental in organizing the troops at Saratoga. The town continued to grow throughout the 1800s, thanks to its location at the junction of two major wagon routes. In 1825, Tarrytown became a part of newly created Albany County and experienced rapid growth due to its strategic location within easy reach of other settlements on the central Hudson River valley. By 1830, Tarrytown had over 150 residences and businesses. After Albany County was disbanded in 1837, Tarrytown quickly lost some of its importance as a commercial center but still remained an important residential community until it merged with neighboring Clifton in 1898.
