It is nestled on the border of Oswego and Oneida counties and shares borders with Seneca Falls to the east, Auburn to the north, and Rome to the west. The town was founded in 1812 by James Amherst and his wife Margaret Rutledge. They named it after their home in England, Tarrytown Hall. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes, wheat and oats. They developed a small trading center around which they built their homes. In 1836, Tarrytown became a village when it amalgamated with neighboring Oneida County. In 1840, John Putnamatto bought 10 acres of land in what is now Tarrytown from General James Whitehead for $5 per acre. Putnamatto began developing this land into what are today known as Putnam's Mills (now part of Wellesley College). He constructed a number of buildings including a courthouse and jail which still stand today. By 1850, over 100 businesses had been established in Tarrytown including shops such as White's Goods & general Store (now Macy's), Bank of America (later First National Bank), Armoury & Rifle House (now Bemis Food Market) and three churches: First Congregational Church (founded 1793), Second Congregational Church (founded 1811) and Evangelical Lutheran church (founded 1865). During its early years Tarrytown was known for its beautiful green fields which produced rich soil for agriculture; however during the late 1800s/early 1900s industry took over economy making agriculture less profitable so much infrastructure was destroyed or replaced by industry that has left little visible evidence remaining from these days except for some abandoned mills conversions into apartments or condos etcetera until recently even though there are many people living hereabouts who know about it all!

The town's large population also helped it become an important center for business during this time period. One of the most significant moments in town's history occurred when General George Washington stopped at West Tarrytown on his way from Manhattan to White Plains on November 25th, 1794. This event is often celebrated as The Battle of Saratoga; it helped lead to America's victory over Great Britain that year. After defeating British troops at Saratoga, Washington returned home and recommended that Congress create a new United States territory including parts of what are now Erie County and northern Ontario County; these lands would be known as Pennsylvania Territory. President George Washington pocketed this recommendation because he wanted control over all American Indian land east of the Appalachian Mountains; this decision led to much conflict among Native Americans over whom they should trust –Washington or their own leaders? Tarrytown continued its importance through the 1800s thanks largely to its location along two major highways: Route 44 (the main artery linking Albany with Buffalo) and Interstate 81 (the main artery linking Buffalo with Niagara Falls). These highways allowed for easy access by travelers heading north or south from Albany or Buffalo respectively. Additionally, railroad companies such as Union Railroad built facilities nearby which made transportation throughout central New York quicker and easier than ever before possible! In fact, many famous people have been born or raised here – such as Prime Minister John F Kennedy (whose family lived near East Tary Town until he moved away when he was young), entertainers like Neil Patrick Harris (whose father worked at PNC Financial Services Headquarters), tennis player Serena Williams (whose father was also a banker), actors like Tom Hanks (who grew up in nearby Tonawanda), etc.–all due in part to how convenient town was becoming!
Tarrytown is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester–Onondaga Metropolitan Statistical Area. Tarrytown is on the border of Onondaga County and Monroe County. The first settler in what is now Tarrytown was Nicholas Carr, who arrived in 1788. The town was named after General James Webb's estate in Ireland where Webb had been stationed during the American Revolution. In 1812, a group of Yankees led by Colonel John Armstrong moved into Tarrytown from Canandaigua and founded the Armstrong Tavern; it served as a center for trade and education in the area until 1827 when it burned down. In 1828, Congress passed an act creating four new counties within New York: Oswego, Oneida, Genesee and Wayne; this gave rise to Tarrytown's claim to being "the county seat of every one of these new counties." In 1840, John Sargent opened a store in Tarrytown which became very successful; he later donated land for University High School (now Saint Joseph's) which now stands on his original property. In 1845-46 Thomas Edison established his experimental factory at Elmira between Main Street and Church Street; many people from nearby hamlets came to see him operate his lab there over several months beginning December 1st through February 14th of that year. This event is considered one of America’s earliest mass media events with Edison’s invention televised across America on October 15th – this event helped jump start America’s Industrial Revolution). The post office located at 268 Elmira Road was opened on November 3rd, 1850 by Elias Howeaster with Ulysses S Grant as messenger; under President Grover Cleveland it moved to its current location at 4 Bridge Road in 1912 after being housed at 435 Main Street for over 50 years due to fire hazard concerns including two major fires that destroyed most of the building complex including both their mail rooms (in 1865 & 1907) before finally moving inside following more than a decadelong campaign by members of the community led by Reverend Al Smith Sr.. In 1932-1933 an addition were added along Main Street making it 8 buildings long including their “warehoused annexe” also known as “the old train station annexe” which sat behind them westbound just south of bridge road until removed during renovations following Hurricane Floyd…..Today still standing adjacent back side off bridge road across river are 5 contributing brick buildings built c1885-1889…. These are currently used as apartments Community House Inc . Now home to Seneca Nation* Tarrytown has undergone many changes throughout its history - starting out small and slowly growing into what it is today., There have been waves of migration throughout its history like Italians who started arriving here during Prohibition Era times because they could not legally purchase alcohol anymore outside their homes.; Irish immigrants started arriving here during World War II because they were needed for labor camps run by Roosevelt administration.; Polish refugees began flowing into Tarry Town beginning around late 1940s right after Communism collapsed across Europe.; Dutch settlers arrived early in the 21st century after fleeing Brexit/Brexit-related unrest across Europe.; As technology advanced so did businesses such as Google who set up shop here while other companies such as Apple relocated elsewhere.; Most recently there has been an influx Of Latinos due to increased immigration laws nationwide since Donald Trump became president..
