Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located about 16 miles east of Albany. The town was first settled by Germans in the early 1800s and became a commercial center after the Erie Canal was built. In 1824, Tarrytown became the home of General James Wilkinson during his stay as an envoy to France. After Wilkinson's death, Tarrytown become the seat of government for Onondaga County. In 1835, Tarrytown incorporated as a village and remained an unincorporated community until it became part of the new Rochester city limits in 1898. The earliest record of German settlement in what is now Tarrytown dates back to 1772 when Johann Baptist Kapp arrived on horseback from Hamburg with seven others to purchase land near present-day Sayville. The Kapp family would remain residents of this area for many years before moving to Delaware County and then Rockland County where they opened a store. In 1824, General James Wilkinson stayed at the junction of two rivers –present-day Main Street and Buffalo Creek– while he traveled between Paris and New York City on his way home from serving as an envoy to France. When Wilkinson died in 1835, his widow decided to move their children from Delaware County into Onondaga County so that they could be nearer their father's grave at Mohawk Valley National Park (now within Onondaga Lake). However, due to administrative turnover within Onondaga County following county formation in 1836, few records survive from this era; therefore, we know very little about life in early TarryTown beyond what can be gleaned from historical documents or oral history.[1] In 1840 John Cramer established himself as one of America's leading farmers with 12 cows and 5 horses grazing on 640 acres (2 hectares) along Main Street west of today's High School building;[2] however growth stalled around this time because there were no railroads connecting upstate New York with Philadelphia or Boston yet. This changed with the construction of the Erie Canal which connected upstate New York with Pennsylvania via Buffalo (then called Sidellsburg)[3] thus stimulating economic development all around central New York State including TarryTown itself![4]:7 By 1850,[5]:126 John Cramer had moved his operation 8 miles down Main Street towards today’s High School building: “about two blocks northward [of] where today’s First Presbyterian Church stands” according to historian Edward Ahern who added that “Cramer soon realized that if he could get close enough to load wagons with goods onto the canal boatman’s boats…he could transportation products far down into Pennsylvania without having them leave Syracuse [the capital city], carry them all the way through Ulster [the old western borderland], stop at Canandaigua [on Lake Ontario], then cross over into Pennsylvania….This change not only made possible more efficient shipping but also allowed him gradually increased acreage—to 840 acres (2 hectares)—and started manufactures such as saddles and harnesses on premises”:[6]:215 With access to better transportation options like canalboats came opportunity for businesses such as Cramer’s Store # 1 which rose quickly outfitted wagonmakers working offloading goods onto barges plying Buffalo Creek until 1870 when Ford Motor Company began production here on land Cramer had leased from Moses Sunken Road & Bridge Company.[7]:254 Today river walking tours abound throughout downtownBuffalo taking visitors past both original buildings dating back centuries plus significant current sites like High School

During World War II, many local businesses took advantage of wartime shortages to create munitions factories which produced weapons for both Allied and Axis forces.
