Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located just north of Albany. It is the seat of Tarrytown Supervisor District 7 and is bordered by the towns of Cayuga County to the east, Ontario County to the west, and Schenectady County to the south. As of 2010, Tarrytown had a population of 6,394. The name "Tarrytown" was derived from its location on the southern bank of the river Orinoco near where it empties into Lake Erie. The first settlers in what would become Tarrytown arrived in 1792 when Captain Benjamin Franklin and his party founded Fort Niagara on Castle Island in present-day Albany. The fort served as headquarters for several months until British forces burned it down on September 12, 1792. The original inhabitants were those who accompanied Captain Franklin and builtFort Niagara: men from Kingston and Guysand Manor in Kings county; John Heckscher from Schaghticoke; Nicholas Flussmacher from Otsego; Israel Putnam from Clinton; Samuel Tucker from Rome; George Richardson from Scotia Highlands; Daniel Dennison from Westchester county (now Onondaga); John Purdy from Canandaigua ; Joseph McCabe and others. In 1812, after years of skirmishes between American Indian nations and British forces during the Creek War, General William Tecumseh Sherman's army marched through Tarrytown on its way to attack Mobile Bay. Major General Oliver Hazard Perry's army avoided engagement at this time but took up position around Fort Niagara opposite Tarrytown while supplies were brought overland. A resulting battle that day resulted in more than 300 casualties for both sides but no victors emerged as neither side could claim an advantage due to their numerical disadvantages. Three years later Commodore James Ketchum's squadron commanded by Commodore David Dixon anchored off Long Island Sound with stores for his expedition against Mexico City under command of Rear Admiral Isaac Watts Farragut Jr.. At about 4 PM on October 10th 1814 they discovered land which they named San Miguel de Tucuman after Saint Michael Archangel who had landed there earlier that day with a force led by Father José de Jesús y Gómez seeking aid against Mexican troops under Governor Antonio López de Santa Anna at Yucatan Peninsula….After landing their supplies they established themselves upon some high ground commanding a view across Nassau Harbor towards Mexico City…. After spending some days ashore preparing their arms they sailed back out early November morning…..On November 16th 1814 about 8 PM about 80 miles southeast latitude wrote them ashore………They disembarked all but 3 officers & 50 men…..A party went ashore with axes induced Indians (about 15) living among us to come out & surrender…..These Agents found we had no intention of giving up our arms tho’ surrounded by superior numbers

Tarrytown, New York is a small town located in central Upstate New York. It was first settled by the Dutch in 1624 and became part of the United States in 1784. The population of Tarrytown was 5,554 as of the 2010 census. The early history of Tarrytown is intertwined with that of its namesake, Tarrytown Lake. The land where Tarrytown now lies was purchased by George Washington in 1784 for £2,500 (about $40,000 today). Washington named the lake after his hometown of Derry Township on Staten Island. At first, only a small number of people lived in Tarrytown; most residents were farmers or fishermen who supplemented their income by fishing from the lake. However, over time, development began to occur around the perimeter of Tary Town and eventually within its borders. The first shop opened at 4th and Market Streets in 1814 and soon thereafter began to grow rapidly due to demand from tourists visiting the site of Niagara Falls nearby. In 1872, entrepreneur James Kapp started an elevator company headquartered at 3rd and Main Streets which quickly grew into one of upstate New York’s largest employers. By 1925, Kapp had developed what is now known as Kapp Plaza – one of several major commercial districts located throughout downtown Tarrytown today. In 1957, enrollment at Carleton College reached 875 students – making it one of only a handful educational institutions located outside Manhattan Beach on California’s Central Coast (the others being Pomona College). Since then, Carleton has seen significant growth both online and on campus; currently enrolling more than 1400 students through online programs alone! The growth experienced by Carleton has also led to increased traffic congestion along Route 6A which bisects downtown Tarrytown; however this bottleneck has recently been rectified with construction efforts underway to build a new interchange adjacent to Governors Park which will improve access for both drivers and pedestrians alike! Today’s incarnation of Tary Town boasts some impressive cultural treasures - such as two theaters (the Masonic Temple & First Presbyterian Church), three libraries (Carleton Library #1 & #2 & State Library), four restaurants (& three cafes), two art galleries (& one industrial arts gallery), five music venues (& one classical music venue), four museums (!), twelve businesses (& eleven mom-and-pop shops) and innumerable retail establishments (+ twenty six service stations)! As if that weren’t enough diversity there are also several dozen volunteer organizations operating out OFCOMD (Occupational Health & Safety Department)! And let’s not forget our esteemed police department who provide necessary security services during festivals/events/nightlife events etc!?!? All told it truly is an amazing community – full Of Charm!
