In 1824, Abraham Lincoln visited Tarrytown while he was campaigning for president; he stop at one of the local stores before continuing his tour of upstate New York. In 1892, two brothers started a grocery store in what is now downtown Tarrytown which quickly became one of the largest in town. They also opened a post office and two churches (First Presbyterian and Methodist). By 1912 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtown Tarrytown alone! After World War II, when manufacturing declined throughout most of Upstate New York due to technology advances elsewhere, many businesses closed or moved away from Tarrytown because they could no longer compete with nearby towns that had larger populations and more established economic structures. However, some businesses such as GEDCO Inc., continued to operate until recently despite competition from newer communities closer to major metropolitan areas. One remaining business which has been around since before World War II is Bemis Furniture which specializes in classical furniture including antiques and period pieces; their inventory changes frequently but they have been able to stay open since 1951 thanks to their customer base who continue to come back year after year!

Tarrytown is a small town in western New York, United States. It was named after the Tarry River which runs through it. The population of Tarrytown was 1,362 at the 2010 census. The history of Tarrytown goes back to 1798 when General John Forbes founded a post on the east bank of the Tarry River as part of his campaign against French forces in North America. In 1814, Captain James Wilkinson arrived in Tarrytown and built a sawmill on the north side of the river. After Wilkinson's death in 1828, his son-in-law, Daniel Webster (the first U.S. Senator from Massachusetts), took over running the mill while he developed a ranch near by. Webster also donated land for an agricultural college and hospital in 1849 which became Buffalo University; both institutions remain active today. In 1857, Parmenio Donnini opened a grocery store and restaurant at 5 Main Street; this business became Donnini's Drug Store and Restaurant which still operates today as one of New York's largest food retailers. The store had two stories with sixty feet (18 m) of width each and dimensions that would be typical for modern supermarkets today: large parking spaces outside and inside, 350 foot (110 m) long main aisle with two levels including a basement level for storage, warehousing and customer service areas on either side of an escalator/lift leading up to the second floor where shoppers could purchase their groceries items like dairy products or breads from case managers who handled returns or pick-ups from local delivery services like Wagon Wheel Delivery Company during busy periods or when they needed help finding something specific within their store - such as canned goods not stocked at all local stores). Donnini also operated three other restaurants: The Italian Bistro on Main Street opposite Donnini's Drug Store; The Greek Isles at 10 Elmira Avenue off Route 7 south near what is now Elmira Correctional Facility; and The Commodore Ballroom at 315 Monroe Avenue off Route 11 west near what is now Niagara Falls College; all three restaurants were closed between 1925 and 1955 due to Prohibitionism although Donnini reopened several times throughout prohibition until closing again in 1951 following repeal nationwide symbolically with many people coming out to celebrate along with him – making him one of only two restaurateurs ever convicted under Prohibition laws (the other being Joe McCarthy). "The Commodore Ballroom", "The Greek Isles", "The Italian Bistro" are currently standing buildings located off Routes 11 & 7 just past Niagara Falls College campus - these buildings have been completely renovated into luxury apartments since Repeal went into effect killing any chance for them remaining open as commercial businesses however they may still provide excellent view & live music events from time to time

Tarrytown is one of the most established and well-known communities in all of New York City, dating back to 1795 as part of Westchester Township. The name means " Landing at the Mill" in Dutch and means "the town at the mill".
