Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the border of Ulster and Warren counties. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. In 1916, Tarrytown merged with nearby Rome to form an enlarged city which still retains its name today - Tarrytown-Rome. However, in 1951 that city separated from Tarrytown and became its own separate town again - something that has never been done in Rome. Today, much of what made Tarrytown so unique has been lost in time: The downtown core is only a few blocks wide; most of the brick buildings were built before World War II; and there are very few remnants of classical architecture or 19th century life left outside of some modest Victorian homes. That said, there are plenty of interesting shops and restaurants within walking distance of most residents' homes - whether you're looking for local produce or international cuisine!

Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the north bank of the Susquehanna River. It was first settled by European Americans in 1784. The name is derived from the Algonquian word meaning "a place where water does not touch the ground." In 1806, Tarrytown became a part of Erie County, and then New York State in 1821. The population of Tarrytown peaked at 8,000 in 1907 and has since declined by about 50%. Today, only a few hundred people live within its limits. The earliest settlers to Tarrytown were primarily Dutch families who arrived around 1650. A few years later, English colonists began arriving as well, and soon there were an estimated 100 or so people living in what is now Tarrytown. Over time, different groups of immigrants arrived and left their mark on the community; some made permanent homes while others moved frequently to find new opportunities or maintain ties with their old friends and compatriots. In spite of its small size, Tarrytown had a significant impact on American history. For example, it was one of the first towns to be established in upstate New York after the United States acquired that state from Great Britain in 1776. This fact may have been due to its location – just across the Susquehanna River from Philadelphia – and its access to important trade routes both westward and eastward. Additionally, Tarrytown played an important role during America's Revolutionary War; several stores and workshops closed down throughout much of western Pennsylvania because supplies could not come through without entering through TarryTown proper. Upon America's victory over Great Britain at Saratoga Springs on September 14th (1777), General George Washington issued a proclamation congratulating his troops for their successful campaign: "And we are hereto certify that this day our enemies did homage to us with great solemnity at every point along our line…and many hundreds came hither for present relief." In addition to being an important stop on route #1 throughout much of Pennsylvania during this critical period (before major roads were built), Pembertonville also became an important post-battle base thanks largely to its location near the river crossings critical for transporting foodstuffs into revolutionary-era Philadelphia (now known as Rosslyn). Throughout these years - until about 1800 - most residents agreed that “Tarry Town” should have been called Dunmoreown because it was right next door! Some dispute whether “Dunmoreown” would actually have sounded moreLikeable than “TardyTown” which everyone knew already! But whatever you call it – TRUST US WITH OUR HISTORY….It matters alot!
The first Europeans to visit Tarrytown were the Dutch in 1614. The town was founded by Benjamin Hollis in 1723 as a small farming community on the east side of the Hudson River. It became an important transportation and commercial center during the colonial period, and was also known for its production of bacon, cheese, wine, and other products. In 1807, Tarrytown was incorporated as a village, and it remained an independent municipality until 1951. During World War II, Tarrytown played a significant role in the Battle of Yorktown as headquarters for General George Washington’s army. Today, Tarrytown is home to a number of unique buildings and attractions including the Presidential Library and Museum, which are open to the public each day from 9am to 5pm; the New England Aquarium; and several restaurants including Benjy’s Tavern & Grill and The Turtleback Grille.
