Tarrytown is a small hamlet in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is located on the east side of the Hudson River and was once a major stop on the Erie Canal. The town was first settled by colonists from England in 1614. Tarrytown became an American town on July 1, 1826. Tarrytown has a population of about 2500 people as of 2016. In 1614, English colonists arrived in what is now Westchester County and set up camp near present-day Tarrytown on the east bank of the Hudson River. They named their new settlement after Sir Thomas Tarrant, an English nobleman who had been sent to America to survey land for a royal colony. The early settlers here were farmers and traders who traded with Europeans and Native Americans along the riverbank. By 1785, however, most of these people had moved away because of difficult living conditions and lack of available land. However, some men from nearby Saratoga Springs decided to stay put and begin farming around what is now downtown Saratoga Springs. In 1824 they founded the village of Tioga (now part of Schenectady). This started what would be called “the Tioga Settlement Movement” – an attempt by local residents to keep their community alive when other communities around them disappeared during the Panic of 1837 caused by overprinting issues within the banking system worldwide at that time. The original Tioga meeting house still stands today in downtown Tioga; it has been used as a museum since 1901! The first permanent settler at Tarrytown was John Woolridge in 1785-87; he built a cabin for himself and his family on land which later became known as Woolridge Place northeast corner lot number 3 north side street between Old Baldwins Road (now First Avenue)and Second Street (now Park Boulevard)). woolridge's grandson James Woolridge also lived here before moving to Utica in 1834 but this article does not mention him or his whereabouts

George Washington as a small trading post on the site of present-day Tarrytown Heights. The city quickly became a center for shipping and industry, and its many businesses and residences attracted wealthy farmers, merchants, bankers, manufacturers, and actors from all over New York City. Tarrytown was initially known for its beautiful squares and neat brick houses built by prosperous families who had moved there from nearby villages or towns. But as early as 1819, Tarrytown began to experience firsthand the consequences of industrialization: poverty increased among its residents; business conditions deteriorated; workers lost their jobs thanks to mechanization; crime rates soared. In response to these problems, Mayor John Fenton established the Tarrytown Improvement Society in 1829 to promote economic development within the city boundaries. The society hired architectsurally skilled individuals to design new homes and businesses specifically for use within the limits of Tarrytown—a move that helped create an emerging commercial district outside of downtown that still thrives today. During World War I, however, things began to change for Tarrytown when manufacturing companies shifted their operations southward into upstate New York during wartime production shortages in northern Manhattan. This migration led directly to social unrest within much of inner city neighborhoods such as those around Trinity Church near Ground Zero where factories were located – now home to some of the poorest housing conditions in New York City
