The earliest settlers in what would become Tarrytown arrived during the early 1800s. They were part of a group of people from New York City who decided to move west during the Revolutionary War because they wanted a more democratic society than England had. Many people from New York City fled during the Revolution and settled in what became Pennsylvania and Maryland; however, most of these immigrants did not stay long enough to start their own communities. Instead, they joined groups already living in our area - those who had come downriver from Upper Canada (now Ontario). One such group was led by James Kappeler , who migrated with his brother Michael Kappeler across Lake Champlain into what would become Vermont after hearing about British plans for an invasion into North America through Quebec . In 1777 , Kappeler's group established themselves at present day Tarrytown while others built Fort George on Georgian Bay . After independence was attained in 1783 , many new immigrants began moving into our area - this time seeking out opportunities for social advancement outside of New York City . One such individual was John Toomey whose family came overland from Ireland around 1802 . Soon after arriving at Fort George , John met his future wife Catharine Foote whom he married when she resided at nearby Saratoga Springs '. Together, John and Catharine started a bakery which soon became one of local businesses . Over time, other families also moved into our area including those from Waterford County (now Connecticut), Westchester County (now New York), Albany County (now New Jersey) and even Philadelphia '. By 1840 , almost half of all residents were Irish or Scots-Irish ; however , English speakers constituted only 10%of residents then ). As Church Hill got bigger (it replaced Fort George as the seat of government for select parts of western Vermont ), more residents started moving into Church Hill – eventually making it oneof largest villages within Vermont ". Additionally, due to its location near major transportation hubs like Burlington VT 's downtown core ('Church Hill' still functions as both a shopping center and office park today ), Church Hill rapidly developedinto an important commercial center throughout much eastern Vermont ." In 1857 , when School District No 7 formed within Burlington VT ', it included portions Of Church Hill along with adjacent areas now known as East Aurora IL 's White Plains NY suburbia .) From this point forward,, most events affecting either Church Hill or neighboring towns took place within either Burlington VT or East Aurora IL rather than directly within Church Hill itself ." For example : between 1892-1894 ,"Chamberlain vs United States", conducted inside & outside Courtroom 2 at Old State House featured extensive coverage by Burlington VT newspapers ; likewise.,during World War I (& later II)both sides used Chatham Township HallFor military parades (& hearings )." etc .)
