The town's growth began with its location on high ground between two major rivers—the Hudson River and Mohawk River— making it ideal for farming and trade. Manufacturing started up around World War I because wartime production demand for munitions increased dramatically in rural areas like Tarrytown. There was also significant development during the 1960s when many students moved into the town from outer boroughs of New York City; this migration led to increased housing prices and some tension between those living in established communities and newcomers who wanted smaller schools, more open space for personal activities such as carsports or outdoor fires, and less stringent zoning regulations that limited what could be built near schools and playgrounds. The name Tarrytown comes from the Irish word "tarth" meaning "a settlement on the border of two counties". In 1814, Tarrytown was one of six settlements in what is now Niagara County that revolted against the British Crown in the War of 1812. The community was founded by soldiers who deserted from Fort Erie during the war and their families migrated to Tarrytown from Buffalo and Rochester after they were unable to find jobs inNew York City. Among those who first arrived were Major General James Montgomery (1811–1892), who served as Military Governor for part of 1815; his brother Colonel John Montgomery (1785–1859) In 1821, Nathaniel Greene purchased 640 acres (2 km²) southeast of downtown Tarrytown from Sir George Carteret Thomson for $5,000 (). Greene had been appointed colonel commandant general's regiment at Fort Erie post during the war and he decided to set up a permanent military village near his new fortification. He named it Greeneville after himself and opened it up to civilian settlers on July 7, 1821. The town gradually grew around Greeneville until it reached its current size about two miles northeast of downtown in 1830 when landowner Isaac Smith donated an additional 1/4 mile (0.6 km²). At that time there were only fifty residents in Greeneville when Smith donated the land which included most of what is today called North Main Street between Frontage Road and Oneida Lake Boulevard north through central Tarrytown along with much of South Main Street between Frontage Road and First Avenue south across Oneida Lake Boulevard into North Park Avenue northwest cornering First Avenue The nucleus that became known as Tarrytown developed around Greeneville because local merchants wanted a close-knit community where they could share profits generated by farming products such as corn, potatoes, wheat, hay & straw exports or running local blacksmiths After Smith's donation came other land donations over time including: 3/8 acre (1 ha) by Augustus Kelley in 1840; 5 acres (2 ha) by John Larkin on behalf of Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr., founder & CEO Vandyke tobacco company; 2 acres (0.8 ha) by Leonard Huntley on behalf of Maurice Bourgeois; 2/3 acre(1 ha) by Elias Putnam in 1860 followed by another 3/8 acre(1 ha) gift from Huntley five years later Tarrytown quickly became one of New York's wealthiest communities with access to many businesses including groceries stores such as Grocery Outlet Company #7 which operated from 1905 until 1978; banks like National Bank #3 which opened its doors on November 17th 1865; doctor offices like Drury Clinic #10 which operated until 1991; cotton mills like Hennepin Mills #5 built 1908-1909 but closed 1958-1959 under Congressional pressure following World War II .
