The area that now makes up Syracuse was settled by Native Americans before Europeans arrived in search of new land to farm. Onondaga Creek divided the area into two parts, one ruled by local warlords and their retainers while the other formed what would become Onondaga County. The first european settlers arrive in 1722 when James Wright founded Wrightstown on Cayuga Lake near present-day downtown Syracuse. By 1800, over 100 small settlements had been erected along Cayuga Creek throughout what would become Onondaga County including modern day Syracuse, Auburn and Lewiston. On July 14th 1777 during America's Revolutionary War by an act of Congress General George Washington commissioned Captain John Armstrong with 4 horses to explore what became eastern Long Island and southwestern Ontario; Armstrong discovered a route from Montreal to Boston which he named "the Great Path" after his patron saint - St Patrick - thus starting what would become known as American colonization of this new landmass. He also explored present day Niagara Falls on his way back home; this discovery helped lay the foundation for later development around Niagara Falls including mills located downstream on Mohawk River (laterongeon Falls). In 1824 followed Governor William Hennepin's suggestion that three towns be surveyed along NY State Route 12 northward from Rome to serve as nucleus for villages surrounding Rome: Oswego (now Auburn), Oneida (now Elmira) and Ithaca (present day Ithaca). These towns were chartered as Athens (Auburn), Canandaigua (Canandaigua), Guilderland (Guilderland) on October 15th 1824 with limits laid out at Bloomfield Hills east of Rome; these towns continued expanding until they reached their current boundaries – Athens/Albany Town Limit = 7 miles east of Rome Center + 5 miles south+west to NY State Route 12 Altitude = 6500 feet Given its location between Two Rivers Valley in central Upstate New York and Angola Highlands just outside Erie County Precinct 2 – lying atop rolling hills overlooking both rivers – Athens quickly became known for its fine agriculture products such as apples, pears, grapes etc., wheat flour being produced nearby at Ballston Spa mill from 1827 until 1865 when it closed down due to lack of competition from larger mills in neighboring counties . It wasn't until 1830 when Greek Orthodox Bishop Michael Nechama moved his headquarters from Rome to Athens/Albany where he founded Saint Nicholas Monastery becoming one of America’s earliest religious communities providing education for missionaries among Indian nations through parishes established throughout much eastern North America . During his tenure bishops resided alternately at Oneida or Rome but ultimately chose Albany due primarily because then Mayor James Pecora offered free land adjacent to Cathedral Hill which became Temple Square upon Bishop Nechama’s death in 1840 . This gift set off heavy building activity ensuing with plans calls for a new cathedral begun well before completion due largely because Athanasius Greenough who served briefly as bishop during Michael Nechama’s time wanted an attractive square shaped edifice typical of Anglican churches built on high ground accessible only via stairs leading down onto Nassau Street bordering Trinity Episcopal Churchyard [today lower Broadway] ] In 1841–42 parishioners completed construction marking commencement “of that great work Which has lately been going forward within our walls...a structure so vast...so beautiful…with spires reaching 50 feet above the ground” although proceeded slowly given church size & financial limitations . Unfortunately fire destroyed most everything except cornerstone soon after completion ..The finished product still stands today across several blocks between Nassau Street & Broad Streets cornering Trinity Episcopal Church Yard .)
