On November 10 of that year, James V, King of Scotland and England conferred upon these new arrivals land grants that included parts of present-day Syracuse and Onondaga counties. In 1614growth could be seen as an agricultural settlement resulted when Captain John Smith explored what would become Syracuse Bay on his return from his voyage to India Harbor at Nassau Landing on December 9th. He reported finding "a great bay full of people" living thereabouts but no villages or towns had yet been established. In 1784 Revolutionary War General George Washington passed through this region on his way to invade Canada along with other army leaders including Nathanael Greene and Benedict Arnold during their famous Saratoga Expedition which ended with British troops retreating back into America rather than taking any significant casualties. During this time period taverns were very popular among soldiers who would gather near them for dinner while they waited for their next opportunity to leave for battle or town electioneering purposes; these places often served as social clubs where officers would preside over drinking bouts between their fellow men before departing for more important matters around the fortifications outside town limits (the only houses remaining today are those built after 1785). The growth of industry during this time caused some issues within the community however with mills/factory farms being started without proper water supplies becoming polluted leading to serious health problems among workers who resided close by; until much later efforts were made towards developing a comprehensive water supply plan ensuring Smyrna Acquired Lake became a deepLake capable supplying all needs for local residents including industrial users since its creation in 1892. Industry continued to expand until World War II when large areas surrounding downtown were destroyed or abandoned due to bombing raids during that conflict which inflicted extensive damage both physically and emotionally primarily concentrated around Southern Boulevard across from City Hall Park (now known as Roosevelt Boulevard) leaving behind numerous vacant lots which continue to sit undeveloped today despite various attempts at development over the years most notably through partnerships between developers and local organizations such as Historic Syracuse Incorporated whose property forms a contiguous block bounded by Western Blvd., Northern Blvd., Roosevelt Blvd., Auburn Ave., Genesee St., Second St., Third St., Sixth Ave & Transit Rd.. In 1970 Development took place within Eastern Market Square adjacent First Union Plaza resulting in increased traffic congestion along Southern Boulevard particularly during peak hours reaching such levels that buses were called into service providing access not just inside Eastern Market Square but also southward along Third Street eastward past Central Avenue onto Ithaca Road experiencing gridlock each morning until improvements were made beginning in 2006 following recommendations prepared by then Mayor Stephanie Miner inspired by her own experience working closely with then-State Senator Barbara Mikulski during her tenure as Mayor; this culminated with opening of Ithaca Parkway eastbound extending beyond City Limits out into rural Onondaga County becoming an expressway providing alternate routes away from downtown should conditions warrant it while still serving as one route into town reducing vehicular traffic congestion heading northaway from Ithaca Airport allowing easy access both inside eastern market square via Third Streetgoing straight down beneath airport shuttle stop & terminating opposite terminal building immediately prior walkway leading upEAST 2ND STREET TO AUBURN AVE
