Suffern, New York is a small town in Upstate New York, located on the border of Erie and Niagara counties. The population was 5,524 at the 2010 census. Suffern is the only village in upstate New York and it is part of the Rochester–Buffalo– Yonkers metropolitan area. The name of Suffern comes from an Iroquoian word meaning "farmstead on the banks of a stream". The first settler in Suffern was John Palfrey who came to what is now Erie County in 1795. In 1829, Samuel Lewis organized a farm team which he named after his father-in-law, General Israel Putnam. Lewis sold land to other settlers and by 1830 there were twenty families living in Suffern. On April 12, 1832, Henry Sibley purchased 320 acres adjacent to present day Main Street from Joshua Morse for $4/acre (about $ ). A post office called Suffern was established in 1836, and remained open until 1911. The name was changed to Rochester on January 6th of that year. In 1840 Daniel Webster became United States Senator from New York; during his stay here he purchased some land which formed the basis for his later Buffalo home campus at White Plains Road and Broadway (now First Avenue). In 1847 two brothers started a sawmill on main street with four men working side by side using power generated by windmills they had built earlier near Geneva Mills State Park east of town. By 1850 there were over sixty people employed at this mill including several women who cooked meals for customers as well as doing laundry and domestic tasks such as laundering curtains or cleaning windowsills for farmers living ten miles away along Buffalo Creek Valley Railroad south of town. In 1861 local farmer James Blythe donated 1 acre (0,40 hectares) north of the current downtown core to become Village Green after purchasing it from Elias Howe for $5/acre (about $ ). Suffern, NY is a town in Livingston County, New York, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Suffern Manor which was named for Nicholas Morrison (1792-1864), an Albany lawyer and one of the original settlers in this area in 1814. The first settler in what is now Suffern was Nicholas Morison who arrived on horseback from Albany on October 11, 1814. He started a small farm near present day East Main Street and North Avenue. In 1825, he sold his land to Jabez Blythe and family. By 1830, the Morisons had attached their house to a larger farmstead called Pinckneyville and began to raise livestock including cows and calves. In 1835 they moved to their current location where they remained until 1860 when they sold their holdings to George Wulfinghausen. In 1870, Wulfinghausen subdivided his land into two tracts which were combined into one parcel known as West Side Landing where Suffern now stands. At that time it consisted of twelve small farms with a total population of about sixty people. In 1880 Jacob Schieffer bought part of West Side Landing and erected the first frame church in Suffern which still stands today - Saint John's Episcopal Church (now First Presbyterian). Other early buildings included a schoolhouse and post office buildings beforesuffERN became an incorporated village in 1898 under the leadership of Averell Harriman who also served as its first mayor/councilman/ recorder/ justice of peace. During World War II many local businesses supplied goods needed for military production such as ammunition or aircraft parts; these factories closed after the war but some reopened during subsequent decades such as Tractor Supply Company which is still headquartered here today within walking distance of suffERN's Town Hall Square!
