The village was founded in 1836 by colonists from Ulster County, Ireland and named for Suffern Castle on the River Averill in County Clare. The first store opened in 1838 and the first school in 1840. The post office was established in 1846 and the first hospital opened in 1870. In 1932, Suffern joined with other towns to form the Erie Canal Authority which later became known as Conrail. In 1964, Suffern merged with two other villages - Hope (founded 1920) and Latham (founded 1911) - to form what is now called "Suffern-Hope-Latham". Suffern, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, located on the border of Monroe and Wayne counties. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1824 and incorporation took place in 1827. Suffern is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Dutchess (1792-1875). Nicholas's grandson, Arthur Dutchess (1812-1885), helped found Cayuga Lake Village near where Suffern now stands. In 1825 Nicholas's son John Ewing arrived from Canada with his family to start a new life in what became known as "the wilds of upstate". He built two log homes which still stand today: one at 5191 Niagara Falls Rd., now used as a daycare center and another at 5441 Niagara Falls Rd., which is now occupied by the Fordham University School of Law. In 1830 Samuel Morse moved to Suffern from Canandaigua with his family and began developing an early telephone system that would later be called the Morse Code. Samuel's youngest son John Morse (1828-1910) also resided here for some time before he immigrated to America in 1840. His brother Charles Ayer Morse (1829-1900) also came over during this time period and started building tannery businesses along Tioga Road near present day Shaker Heights Boulevard south of Ionia Avenue east of Buffalo Creek Road. In 1845 Augustus Hargrave settled here after traveling through much of North America on his way to open up land around Buffalo via Oregon Trail fame; he had earlier been General George Armstrong Custer's cavalry officer on their ill-fated march into Mexico City five years earlier! lumberman Abram Hewitt bought 1,000 acres southwest of town from Hargrave for $0.50 per acre back in 1846 – this area would eventually become known as Hewitt Township! After several years more searching for a homeite, Jeptha Bates finally settled permanently here around 1850 after purchasing 640 acres northwest of town from Cramer & Elder coopersmiths!. On July 14th, 1860 Union soldier James Kappenheimer killed four cows while out grazing nearby on private property during what is today considered eligible behavior under military regulations; due to this event many settlers refer to Kappenheimer as " Buffalo Jim" throughout history! Prior to this fateful incident most farmers within our township enjoyed unrestricted access to government soil - however starting around 1800 restrictions began appearing on how much corn could be grown & when it could be harvested! This change began shortly thereafter when NY State legislators passed an act forbidding any further westward expansion & effectively ending Erie County's eastern boundary!! Notwithstanding these changes though many farmers continued growing crops until well into the 20th century!! 1
