Suffern, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 9,585 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Niagara Falls–Buffalo Combined Statistical Area. Suffern is located on the north shore of Lake Ontario and within walking distance of both Niagara Falls and Buffalo. The town was founded in 1814 by Captain John Stephenson as a trading post on the then-unoccupied border between Canada and America. In 1827 it became an incorporated village under the name "Suffern." The first settler in what would become Suffern was Nicholas Nevin who arrived in 1796 from Connecticut with his family. He built a cabin near today's intersection of Main Street and Elmira Road. By 1800, most of what is now Suffern had been developed by David Potter and others as they realized there would be plenty of water for farming here since there were no other settlements closer to lakeshore than Suffern itself. The first store opened in 1824 at present day Elmira Road and Broadway Avenue; it served as marketeer for trade with Canada until moved to its current site in 1851 when an addition to Potter's mill enabled him to start producing flour that could be sold throughout North America. In 1828, George Washington Carver came through Safford on his way from Egypt via Albany where he had been asked by Judge Augustus Biddle to provide grain for new residents who were moving into this area following surveying work done by Biddle Senior along the Canadian border which had shown potential rich land grants westward settlement route being available including present day Erie County which lay just east of Carver's farmstead making him one very early entrepreneur par excellence given these natural advantages (andCARVER also did some agricultural production beyond grocery items back then). This initial importation/export activity not only helped bring people into this area but also created jobs such as sawmills that operated during those years while also providing feedstock for later local mills – something unheard of even 50+ years ago! So much so that when cars started becoming popular starting around 1920s locals began driving their own cars instead of relying on outside transportation resources (which limited access due economically speaking) – further illustrating how important autos were back then relative to today’s standards! Finally just outside city limits another interesting museum worth checking out called Queenston Open Air Museum covering aspectsof local life upstateNY throughout various periods ranging from pre-colonization period through current day It was during this time period that Henry Ford set up shop hereabouts too exporting parts & machines needed for his automobile manufacturing plants across North America setting off perhaps one or more largest industrial revolutions ever witnessed simultaneous with similar moral/ethical changes taking place hereinabouts among average folks living paycheck-to-paycheckEEing real austerity & privation daily despite having amenities few people alive today even dream about enjoying (& IF THEY DID THEN THEY WERE DEAD MONEY LUCKY!)
