In 1865, the town of Suffern was platoons of New York Volunteers under General George Meade in an effort to suppress the Confederate insurrection in South Carolina. On November 5th, 1865, Union general Robert E. Lee arrived in Suffern and ordered his army into battle against the volunteer regiment of New York volunteers. The engagement resulted in a devastating Union victory and began what would be a long-lasting Civil War for the town of Suffern.

The Town of Suffern was first settled in 1784 by Loyalists who had fled to America during the American Revolution. The village of Suffern was incorporated as a town on February 19, 1828. Until the late 1800s and into the early 1900s Suffern experienced significant economic decline due to its strategic location between Binghamton and Ontario City on Lake Erie; however, since then it has regained some prominence as an agricultural community with cattle and agricultural production becoming its most important source of income. The townhome industry began to revive in the mid-2000s and today Suffern boasts one of the highest concentrations of single family homes in upstate New York. Suffern is located east of Rochester on Route 9W which leads north to Chenango Valley National Park and east to Canandaigua Regional Airport

Suffern, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Suffern was first settled in 1784 by farmers from Albany and other towns on the west side of the Hudson River. In 1814, it became a village under the name of Northsuffern. The village disbanded in 1918 and Suffern took its current name in that year. It is located within the Town of Chenango and is part of the Mohawk Valley School District. The town was incorporated on April 14, 1833 as a result of an act of Congress passed two days earlier which authorized suffrage for men over twenty-one years old in all U.S. elections including those held by boroughs or villages outside of New York state except for Trenton (New Jersey). The original town plat included only land east of what is now Main Street and north of Halfmoon Road; however, because suffrage had not yet been extended to residents south of Halfmoon Road, all residents were required to vote in open primary elections held on November 2nd each year until it was granted to them by Governor Clinton Pemberton on December 5th 1835 following a referendum through his office. The first election ever held in Suffern resulted in one man being elected as Vice President John Cranch with 49% of the vote against four other candidates who received between 33% and 41%. Voter turnout was high due to news articles distributed throughout upstate New York indicating that Upper Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John Acheson would soon be visiting Buffalo so many people wanted to witness his inauguration before he left for England just weeks later! Although Republican George Washington won every statewide election up through 1789 but did not win any municipal ones (town meetings were still governed by law), he did become president after winning reelection with more than 70% of the votes cast instead giving him three-fifths approval needed for service as vice president under James Ketchum – a role he filled from 1793 until his death in 1800 despite never having traveled outside New York State! In order for Washington not to become governor again after his term ended he needed both houses (the Senate & House) to ratify his actions as president & this they failed to do due largely to partisan politics within their own party at that time! Saddeneduced though they might have been at losing their most powerful political leader since James Ketchum they quickly ratified most everything he did becoming one half way along America’s “ ratification machine” paving way for what eventually became known as “the Constitution Clause Revolution” spearheaded primarily by Aaron Burr!!! Although many others played important roles including Alexander Hamilton who served concurrently as Secretary OF Treasury during much key transitional period leading upFY17 US Constitutional Convention there can be no doubt that without Burr & especially John Cranch things may well have unraveled much differently… indeed our present form ol government owes much Its success To That Generation Of Men Completed Before Them!!!
