The name of the town is derived from the fact that it lies on the border of two counties: Ulster and Montgomery. Suffern was one of five towns in Monroe County which were abolished by the new county government on July 1, 1814. The first settler in what is now Suffern was John Sweeny who platted out a land grant called "The Oaks". He and his wife had five children and he died before they could populate the grant. His son-in-law Nicholas Vesey took over development of the grant and built a grist mill on it in 1793. He also founded what is now Stonington (now part of Malone) as an isolated farmstead named after himself thereabouts in 1811/12. Most likely due to this early success with mills, Nicholas Vesey became one of New York's leading merchants and political leaders during its earliest days as an independent nation – serving twice as Mayor of Syracuse (1824–26), First Vice President under James K. Polk (1865–68), Lieutenant Governor under Andrew Johnson (1871–75), Attorney General under Ulysses S. Grant (1877–81), Mayoralty candidate for Buffalo (1901) – all while residing in Suffern until his death in 1887 at age eighty-six years old - making him one of its longest living mayors to date! In 1812 Nicholas Vesey married Margaret De Witt who was also from Orangeburg County, South Carolina; they had six children: four sons and two daughters. Margaret De Witt died young unmarried at twenty-one years old following a brief illness in 1830; her husband survived her by only seven years to continue developing their holdings within suffern village proper including founding another gristmill thereon known as "Nicholas' Mill" which still stands today & operates successfully today (& has been passed down through many generations). One other notable event during this time period related to suffERN village Proper would be when Isaac Brockman donated land beyond what is now Main Street between Third Avenue & Fourth Avenue known then as Brockman's Swamp & later renamed Sudbury Place after him – giving rise to our current day intersection block located just east thereof including much popular tourist activity due to its rich cultural history dating back nearly 350 years! On November 15th, 1860 three men - Abraham Lincoln Sr., Jacob Perkins & John Todd signed a deed creating "Newburgh Township", unincorporated area west of present daysuffern village limits - along with 111 others doing so that same year becoming parts of Clinton CountyNY!!! This happened mere minutes after Abraham Lincoln'd been elected Ulysses S Grant's Vice President effective January 20th 1865 thru February 12th 1865 succeeding Salmon Peevey Jr./Ulysse S Grant/Abraham Lincoln reelected unanimously April 6th 1865!! In 1870s large telford cotton plantations were developed north side village limits but these gradually vacated over time leaving little evidence remaining today except some abandoned buildings long ago!!

The area that would become Suffern was first settled by Germans in 1795. They named it after their home country of Bavaria (now Germany). In 1824, the town was incorporated as part of Scranton Township. The two townships were merged into one in 1827 and again in 1838 when Scranton andLuzerne Counties were combined into what is now Luzerne County. Suffern's history dates back to before any townships were formed within Luzerne County - it was originally part of Lykens Township which was organized in 1795 and then abandoned by 1800 due to its difficult terrain. Lykens Township re-organized itself on July 1, 1800 under the name "Lunenburg" after Baron von Lunenburg who had donated land for its establishment. The original settlers included David Levy who built a gristmill on the Delaware River near present-day Uniontown; John Wessels who erected a sawmill on White Street; Nicholas Asbeck who founded an academy; George Kapp and Jacob Kapp bought land around present day Asbeck Road; Daniel Jorgensen built a log cabin on what is now East Main Street; Isaac Dunker Settlement opened on December 10th, 1800 by Peter Dyckman from Denmark with stores and a school for his children located north of present day Northumberland Avenue; James Sutherlin established himself as an innkeeper/porter in 1803 at what is now South Main Street while petitions for township organization were being prepared withinLykens Township." In 1830 Susanna Whitman purchased 2 tracts of land east of White Street from Nicholas Asbeck for $350 – this became known as "Whitman’s Hill". On January 11th 1830 She moved her family from their log cabin to their new home which theynamed "Whitman's Hill". This location served as their courthouse until 1902 when it burned down rendering it impossible to continue using it so they relocated back to their original location next door to Mrs. Whitman’s house until 1893 when they moved again (this time 3 blocks west) this time naming themselves “White Hall” after Mrs.(later Miss) White whose father also owned the property adjacent to “Whitman's Hill” Their final resting place can still be seen today just north of Mr./Mrs./Miss./Mr.'s driveway off East Main Street where there once stood another structure housing both our current fire department apparatus storage AND engine shop!
