They also manufactured pistols and revolvers until 1861 when they closed their doors due to financial difficulties. In 1857, J.H. McConnell opened a store on Fourth Avenue which became one of the most important firearms stores in town. During this time period, McConnell made significant contributions to the development of handgun ammunition and accessories as well as shotguns and rifles. He is considered to be one of the key figures behindgunsmithing in New York State. In 1865, George Washington Howland opened his business at 444 Main Street which became one of the most important rifle dealers in town during this time period. Howland was responsible for developing rifle ammunition techniques as well as creating new types of firearms including bolt action rifles and leverguns that would later become popular among hunters throughout New York State. His store remains an important part of local rifle history today and continues to serve customers with distinction today!

They named the area after an island near Rotterdam, Netherlands. The community was chartered as a village on April 14, 1792 by George Washington. The original courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1812 and replaced with a new building which still stands today. In 1854, Suffern became part of Albany County and was renamed after James Kesselring, leader of Germany's navy during World War II. In 1924, suffern became part of the newly formed New York City borough of Manhattan and was given its own ZIP code. The community continues to maintain its separate character despite having become one unit with many similar amenities to other NYC boroughs. Today,suffern remains an agricultural center with a wide variety of crops including apples, grapes, potatoes and corn; as well as processing plants for theatrical makeup and food items like yogurt or ice cream

Suffern, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,562 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Erie County and has been so since 1837. The town was named for Suffern, a hamlet on the Niagara River near its confluence with the Susquehanna River. The first settler in Suffern was James Cranch in 1792. In 1837, the town became part of Erie County when it was created from portions of Ontario and Tioga Counties. In 1907, suffern passed through an act of the New York State Assembly to annex what were then Oswego Township and other townships in Tioga County; this annexation made suffern one of only two towns in Erie County that did not originally geographicize themselves as such (the other being Schenectady). In 1978, Suffern residents passed a referendum to become self-reliant by secession from Erie County effective January 1st following years of discussion on whether or not to do so. On July 15th of that year they did so by adopting a new constitution which stated "SuffERN SHALL BE ITSELF A GOVERNMENT OF ITS OWN AND MAY MAKE ALL DECISIONS NECESSARY TO THE EFFECTUAL OPERATION OF SUFFERN COUNTY." This action set off much debate among locals as to whether or notsuffern should be entirely within Erie County or if it should have its own government separate from that of county officials but ultimately went down 50-50 with just over half voting in favor while almost all county officials voted against secession; township leaders also voted against secession but this vote failed due to lack of support within their respectiveTownship boundaries. As per state law at the time self-reliance status applied only to municipal corporations whereas municipalities may independently apply for state aid which includes funding for infrastructure projects; however there have been occasional cases where individualsuffERN residents have obtained both state and local funding for various initiatives outside municipal boundaries (e.g., building a sports arena). As such suffern's position as an autonomous municipality remains tenuous but does provide some degree of financial autonomy compared to most other municipalities within Erie County
On the banks of the Mohawk River, in what is now Suffern, New York, a small but significant village developed around 1750. The town was named after Sir George Washington, who had been born in nearby Albany in 1732 and died at Mount Vernon in 1799. The first residents of Suffern were farmers who tilled land that was donated by Chancellor Livingston on the condition that they keep it for themselves. By 1812, however, there were about 30 people living in the village. In 1814, Suffern became part of Erie County and soon afterward become an important center for trade with neighboring Canada. In 1825, suffern became one of two villages within Erie County that voted to secede from the United States and form their own country called Canada. This event is generally considered to be the start of the Canadian Revolution. The town continued to thrive during Canadien times as a key commercial center andA post office was established in Suffern in 1827.
