Gun barrels were made in Suffern, New York for a variety of different weapons throughout the years. The first guns to be made in Suffern were rifles and pistols. Rifle barrels were often made from local black walnut and were fired at distances up to about 100 yards. Pistol barrels were also made from local black walnut and fired at distances up to about 25 yards. Barrels for shotguns began to be produced in the late 1800s, and these barrels typically used white oakum oil as their lubricant.
Suffern, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The population was 7,537 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse- piston area. The first settlers in Suffern were Dutch who arrived in 1624 and named it "Suffren". A post office was established in 1795, and for many years it was the only station on this side of the Mohawk River. In 1813, John Wiseman built a gristmill on Whitehall Creek which became one of the largest mills in upstate New York. The mill had two sails that could be used to power saws or other machinery. In 1837, John Wiseman's son Samuel founded what would become Oneonta Bank which continues to operate today as Oneonta National Bank. In 1916, suffern residents organized themselves into a local agricultural society to purchase land east of their town line and build a large farmstead known as Westfarmstead Township. This new township would eventually become incorporated as Suffern Village (now part of Onondaga County). I am writing aboutsuffern because there has been so much change here over time both good and bad! There have been many people who have made an impact on this small town through their actions or words! Some examples include: Samuel Wiseman (John Wiseman's son), Reverend Driscoll Brothers (The Reverend Driscoll donated land for village formation), General Motors Corporation (GM founded its research center here), The Erie Canal Company (ECHO constructed a canal from Buffalo down to Syracuse), United States Senator Adlai Stevenson III (Adlai Stevenson ran for President here in 1964) and more! Suffern has also seen some heavy industry come and go including: Carrier Corporation (Carriers moved their manufacturing plant from Utica to Suffern before being bought by American Trucking Association(ATA)), Phelps Dodge Company (Phelps Dodge built their famous water tower here!), US Steel Corporation(US Steel built an armory/steel mill on Hope Road near Main Street) & more! Today there are several businesses active in this small town including: Oneonta Federal Savings Bank which provides banking services for locals & businesses; Gannett Co., Inc.(Gannett purchased Western Union Headquarters building here); Westfarmstead Township Memorial Museum which offers educational programs about early homesteaders & local history; Oneonta Elementary School closed due to budget cuts but reopened under new management later that year; The Bluegrass Tavern where I sat down with Mayor Don Weisman recently for dinner; Lake George Golf Course which is home to several different tournaments each year; Applebees restaurant where I sat down with Manager Kevin Mahoney recently for lunch; Empire Brewing Company - I went into Empire Brewery and had a beer called "Alaska" They have an extensive food menu with items like hot dogs & hamburgers etc.; Lionsgate Entertainment Group - they own several movie theaters around central NY including Regal popcorn theater located just across from Orangeburg High School (& incidentally...the school auditorium inside empire brewery!). There has also been plenty of negative change too! Many families have lost everything they've worked hard for during recent periods such as during Hard Times when banks closed doors left few options open for those struggling. There have also been times when violence erupted between rival groups within suffERN or even outside the community altogether!! So much has changed since my childhood days growing up here- I can't even begin to imagine what will happen next? But all I can do is continue living my life according to my beliefs & keep praying that something good will come out of these tough times!.

Suffern is a town in the town of Adirondack Park in the U.S. state of New York. It was founded by Loyalists from Ulster County, New York, on a site called Suffern Station on the Erie Canal in 1814. The community acquired its name from suffocating under an overflowing manure pit in 1835 and from its location near the mouth of the White River. In 1840, Suffern became one of five towns in Erie County to be incorporated as Village of Suffern; it remained so until 1959 when it became a municipality within Adirondack Park. The population was 24,811 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Suffern were Dutch settlers who explored and charted what is now upstate New York during the 16th century A.D.. In 1724, French traders discovered and mapped much of what is now upstate New York while exploring for fur trade with Canada; they named this area "Le Nouveau Jersey", after their new discovery (present-day Jersey City). On March 14, 1814, General James Ketchum's brigade under Major Robert Livingston arrived at Fort George on Lake Ontario to suppress an American uprising against British rule following Your Excellency's victory over Lord Cornwallis at Saratoga Creek two days earlier (June 10). Aftermath of that battle led to increasing resentment against Britishers by many Americans throughout most of North America - including some Loyalists back home in Ulster County who had sided with England during that conflict In 1840, about 30 families living around Suffern started trading flour into Kingston – then part of Albany – for goods sold there by farmers west of Albany because bread wasn't available any closer than Albany. At least four mills were built along Roosevelt Road between 1850 and 1860: Reuben & Sons (1851-1910), Burr Street Mill (1860-1910), Mohawk Mills (1860-1920) and John Cramer’s Factory No 2 (1891-1970). For many years there was also a Laundry House on Congress Street west of Main Street which served as both store and residence for locals until it burned down circa 1910 Fearing another overflow manure pit might burst due to increased population growth rates during the mid 1800s, local farmers petitioned for township status in 1835; but because no township election could be held until November 1st that year due to political wrangling among various factions within Adirondack Park governing body – villagehood instead took form In 1860–61124 families occupied 640 acres comprising present day Addison Road east sideoftown limits south sideoftown limits north sideoftown limits accordingto Map dated 1862 There are references to “a great gathering place for people” being located “about three miles above us [suffERN] on high ground” whereupon Sometime after This Place Was Named “Newburgh” By Some Of Our People But Has Been Removed et al map dated 1861 shows location as Point Pleasant Manor Incorporation papers filed December 6th 1881 show same property as aforesaid however changed name Tosuffern Incorporated October 21st 1895Map dates 1865 Showing addition Of 100 acres More land Added Said tract To Be Located On 3 Mile High Ground East Ofpost Office And West Of Line 4 Truck Roads Also Known As Holland Rd Etc etc . . . So Much For Settling Down We All Continued To Farm & Trade Hereabouts Until About 1911 When Town Name reverted Back Tosuffern Incorporated
