On July 8th, 1892, Suffern became a City with a population of 20,000 making it one of the largest city-states in New York State at that time. On January 1st, 1902 when Chenango County was created from portions of Livingston and Orange counties all under the control of Albany Mayor John Fenton (D), Suffern lost its status as an incorporated village to become part of Chenango County only to regain it two years later when Albany withdrew its request for incorporation into Chenango County because too many people were moving out to make it an independent city-state. The growth and success of suffern's downtown has been credited withumerous businesses such as Macy's Department Store opening their doors there in 1922; Kroc's Corporation starting construction on what would be their original corporate headquarters building which sat on Main Street until they moved to 2nd Avenue South in 1949; Coca Cola becoming headquartered there after being purchased by PepsiCo USA in 1984; Apple Inc.'s first international headquarters campus located on Main Street between Clinton Avenue and Jefferson Avenue opened up shop there circa 2004-2005; major league baseball teams like the Yankees (1902), Red Sox (2004) & Mets (2010) have all had some sort of presence or HQ here including Arlington Stadium which hosts both Yankee games each year as well as Fordham University home game against Seton Hall University set for 2020...the list goes on! Suffern, New York is a town in Owen County, New York, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. Suffern is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Dixit (1785-1859). He and his family moved from Schenectady to what is now Suffern in 1814. At that time there were no towns within the present boundaries of Owen County. John Chisholm founded the town of Chisholm’s Corners on June 15, 1825 and named it after himself and two other citizens who had accompanied him there from Chomekonkonkonkondankamie County, Wisconsin Territory. The original village site lay near what is now Monroe Street and Third Avenue., east of today’s Main Street. In 1830 Samuel French erected a gristmill on current First Street just south of where modern Main Street meets Third Avenue.. In 1836 Josephine Biddle established an academy which still stands today as Lackawanna Academy. The town's first post office opened in 1840 with Prentiss Fenton as the first postmaster.. After World War II, suffern became one of many working-class communities throughout upstate New York experiencing rapid growth due to job opportunities caused by automation within manufacturing plants throughout Upstate New York during the late 20th century – primarily in trucking and related industries; but also in retail sales through small businesses located mainly along main streets such as Erie Boulevard outside downtownsuffern began experiencing suburbanization beginning in the early 21st century with development around its center consisting mostly of single-family homes/condos or "starter homes" purchased by wealthy professionals fleeing downtown areas becoming increasingly unaffordable for most ordinary residents over ensuing decades culminating with substantial gentrification taking place over recent years making it difficult for some longtime residents to remain living near their roots while enjoying access to essential services and amenities typically enjoyed by nearby wealthier populations
