Suffern, New York is a village in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Suffern was incorporated on November 3, 1847. The first settler in Suffern was Amos Green who founded a cabin on the now-destroyed site of Kilbourne Dam in 1795. Green also raised hay and cattle for several years before moving to what is today called Maple Hill and starting his own farm in 1800. Other early settlers included John Drinkwater (1799), Nicholas Greig (1801), James McGregor (1802), David Rankin (1803), Richard Nye (1805) and Cornelius McClarty (1807). Developments within the village followed; first a schoolhouse was built in 1824, then two churches were erected in 1827 and 1830 respectively. In 1837 an post office was established at Suffern with Pomeroy as its first mailer. That same year saw the construction of county road No 7 which ran through town centre from east to west. In 1840 Huron Township became Clinton County and Suffern became one of its six townships along with Auburn, Batavia, Canandaigua, Conklin, Ithaca and Alfredtown; it remained so until 1898 when it reverted to its original six township form when all but Canandaigua were merged into Erie County. During World War II many local industry establishments produced munitions including Pease Aircraft Company which made bombers for the Allies while Syracuse Bobcat Engine Works manufactured engines for military aircraft such as B-29s despatched into war against Japan
Suffern was a town in Albany County, New York, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Sikes who built a cabin on the east side of the Mohawk River in 1786. The only other permanent resident of Suffern until after the American Revolution was John Mifflin who operated an inn and ferry across the river from his home on the west side of the river. After Confederation (the new country's formation) there were few settlers in or around Suffern for many years because transportation and communication improvements made it difficult to pursue any sort of farming or trade. In 1814, suffern became part of what would become Albany County and by 1830 had a population of just over 1,000 people. In 1834, James Worthy opened a general store in Suffern which quickly became known as one of Albany's leading business establishments. By 1860, suffern had increased its population to 5,083 with 1 post office and 136 dwellings. At that time most residents worked near town as jobs were available in surrounding villages such as Schenectady and Troy-on-Hudson. However by 1870suffERN had declined to 3,500 people with only 178 homes still functioning due to declining agricultural production and lifestyle changes brought about by larger towns such as Syracuse and Buffalo taking over much of what once been rural southeastern New York
