Spring Valley, New York is a small town located in Ulster County, New York. The population was 513 at the 2010 census. Spring Valley was named for the valley of the same name which flows through the town. In 1828, Nicholas Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were arrested in Spring Valley on charges of robbery. They were transported to Sing Sing prison where they died from asphyxiation while awaiting trial. In 1865, James Wooton opened a grocery store in Spring Valley and named it Wooton's Grocery & Ale Barracks. It became one of the first stores in Spring Valley to open after the end of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. The store continued to be run by Wooton and his family until 1978 when it closed its doors for good. The Store at 242 Main Street reopened as "The Barnes" in 1984 and continues to operate today as a full-service general store with an extensive range of groceries, spirits, beer, wine and other items. It has been successfully managed by members of their family since 1984. In 2006, "The Barnes" partnered with Albany-based retailer Second Chance Books to create what is now called The Barnes & Noble Experience at The Barnes; a co-branded retail location that offers books, music, video games and more than 20 different dining options including casual seating inside and outside on two levels separated by an outdoor patio/grill area complete with fire pits for summertime fun!
